I worked at Citizen Engagement Lab full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This would have been a great job but I was unable to relocate to the Bay area, so I could not keep it.

    Cons

Location. Downtown Berkeley to Downtown Oakland, not much better, still high rent areas.

I worked at Citizen Engagement Lab full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Positive social mission, friendly coworkers, nice office

    Cons

Long work hours with few breaks, culture of workaholism, expectation of dealing with things at all hours of the day and on weekends.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees because they will burn out if you don't.

    Pros

Friendly co-workers, some interesting projects, great location (if you can afford it), most of the work felt relatively meaningful.

    Cons

Staff turnover was ridiculously high, management is constantly changing their minds about strategic direction of projects, all the truly good and smart people leave after only a few months, burnout is easy to achieve, and while some projects are interesting and fulfilling, some are complete jokes and a waste of time. Guess which ones management prioritizes?

    Advice to Management

Stop planning to plan, and just plan. Do more to recognize when your staff is starting to falter and looking for exits. These are fixable problems if you actually talk to your staff instead of having middle management talk to everybody and supplicate back.

I worked at Citizen Engagement Lab full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work with some of the smartest, hardest-working people in the social change sector. Not just the core CEL staff, but the client organizations are full of amazing folks working to make the world a better place. Individuals are motivated and know their stuff.

    Cons

Hard to get management to decide on "big picture" decisions. Constant battle to prioritize work between short and long term. Understaffed for the number of clients. Reality doesn't always match rhetoric.

    Advice to Management

Take staff complaints seriously. Grow and nurture younger employees. There's a reason the staff experiences such high turnover.

    Pros

CEL is an excellent environment for professionals who are leading experts in their field and those who feel motivated by highly-achieving, intelligent colleagues. It is an inspiring and truly fast-paced environment where employees feel challenged.

    Cons

Expect to manage multiple, high priority projects simultaneously and independently. At times it can be challenging to establish clear role expectations.

I worked at Citizen Engagement Lab full-time

    Pros

Up until about 2015, it was a great place to work -- collaborative and innovative. Strong feeling of team spirit. Strong salaries for early-career nonprofit types.

    Cons

Became very disorganized and dispiriting as everyone left or was let go. Lots of office drama, overshadowed the nonprofit work by the end of my time working there, unfortunately.

    Advice to Management

Go back to traditional management and lean into the beautiful space/ art angle. I really hope things turn back around for the better!

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Citizen Engagement Lab full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Feel good about the work you are doing.
    * Really nice, caring co-workers. Note that I am not necessarily saying everyone, but most.

    Cons

    * Too much of a bottleneck.
    * A lot of behind-the-scenes conversations, not enough transparency
    * Turnover was stupidly high. 2 years was considered senior staff. TWO. YEARS.

    Advice to Management

None, really. I've heard they changed a lot of their policies which makes me wonder if it has improved or if the management I dealt with is even there anymore.

    Pros

Smart committed caring people doing excellent work in the world.

    Cons

Unneeded stress and not as much support as would be ideal. Not fun.

I worked at Citizen Engagement Lab full-time

    Pros

They treat you well and have great benefits but compensation is only okay. The work you do at CEL is supporting really amazing movements - the organizations you work with are inspiring and actually affecting change. Work with some really great people.

    Cons

Upper management seems to be the only opinion that gets heard. High staff turnover rate and direction of company is constantly changing.

    Cons

Frustration with shifting campaign priorities, doesn't feel like much gets done.
