I have been working at Citrix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good work-life balance, flexible hours, cool people to work with, great vision

    Cons

Upper management seems to have problems executing on vision, poor compensation compared to industry, some areas of middle management become a good ol' boys club where different ideas are not given a fair chance

    Advice to Management

Stick with one story (XenApp's going away oh wait no it's not is hard to sell to customers), execute on vision, encourage differing opinions.

I have been working at Citrix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some groups allow you to work from home at least one day a week

    Cons

Horrible middle management, too much politics, company cares nothing about loyalty to employees. Any long term employees are always targets for job elimination. If you're not in one of the cliques, expect to be miserable until they can find a way to get rid of you.

    Advice to Management

Clean house. Too many middle managers and directors are incompetent and unethical,

I worked at Citrix full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

CEO and senior execs are around and accessible

    Cons

Fort lauderdale middle management cannot budget or ask for more. People have been there 15+ years in some cases so promotion takes forever pay is horrible

    Advice to Management

West coast salary should = east coast salary

    Pros

Great pay, nice quarterly bonuses for sr. level individual contributors and above, superb executive team.

    Cons

Middle management has improved but is still mostly technically incompetent and lacks accountability. There is still a strong push to use outsourcing in India/China even though most efforts have not proven successful and costs to do so are likely increasing. Promotions are still scarce but raises have returned to somewhat normal in the past couple of years. The review system does not reward top performers enough and does not hold completely incompetent/lazy contributors accountable.

    Advice to Management

There has been a strong push towards culture change lately in regards to innovation, design, and scalability. If this goal is truly desirable, then change needs to happen. The correct behavior that is needed for this change is being punished rather than rewarded and the opposite is true for people that are sticking with the status quo. Look out for your top performers leaving Fort Lauderdale in the next few years. The bad housing market that kept many from leaving are no longer waiting patiently for the market to return. Many are realizing that the housing market is not coming back anytime soon and are considering foreclosing or doing a short sale. These people are not likely moving to another Citrix location..

    Pros

Overall the benefits package is good. Felt very welcomed during the interview process. The company has some very good products, esp. the online division.

    Cons

In general there appears to be a big gap between the rank and file, and middle management. There appears to be two sets of rules (one for managers and the other for everyone else). Unless you belong to the special clique don't expect your career to advance. The company has grown very quickly over the last few years and there are people that have no reason being managers. They were good do'ers but terrible managers. Just because they are a good do'er and there for a long time, is no reason to promote someone to fill an open managers spot. Also there are too many people with Director and Manager titles that do not manage anyone.

I have been working at Citrix

    Pros

decent pay and benefits, smart people, depending on location.

    Cons

inadequate communication among groups, poor cooperation and sometimes low quality work from some groups, turf battles and politics everywhere, particularly in middle management. the comment from the Bangalore guy about "politics in the US" is ridiculous. it's the reverse view here. evidence of the communication problems.

    Advice to Management

integrate your groups faster. light a fire among the retirees in Florida. Ditch your HR department entirely, followed soon after by your IT group.

    I worked at Citrix

    Pros

A good history of products in the division I worked in, Citrix Online, which was an acquisition formerly known as ExpertCity. Citrix would not have GoToMyPC, GoToMeeting, or GoToAssist without this acquisition. ExpertCity was an innovative company with some extremely bright people. The products they created were strong and breathed new life in to Citrix as a whole. It was fun working at ExpertCity and Citrix up through the initial period after the acquisition.

    Cons

After the acquisition of ExpertCity was complete, the talent began to disappear. The geniuses behind ExpertCity all quit, one by one, cashed out their options, and founded new startups. Making matters worse, there was an incredibly complex/redundant middle management structure with an emphasis on consensus, making any forward progress almost impossible due to constant conflicts. The company has yet to release a new product since the acquisition in 2004, aside from incremental updates to maintain compatibility with operating system changes (Windows Vista, etc.), or spinoffs which are more marketing pushes than actual development. Fresh ideas were quite literally laughed at, or the thought of them instilled dread and panic in some middle management execs. The sense I got about the rest of Citrix outside of this division in California is that it is very different culturally than the company they acquired. Their products seem incredibly arcane, dated, and so buggy that it's an absolute miracle of salesmanship that anyone takes Citrix seriously. MetaFrame is one of the most ugly, buggy pieces of software I've ever seen, for example. Citrix's CEO Mark Templeton made a few trips out to California to see how we were doing. He's very personable and a great communicator, but lacks vision. Some of the ideas he expressed to us in meetings were so half-baked and silly that they would actually make excellent comedy. They also had nothing to do with the direction of the company at the time or subsequently - it was just mindless wheel spinning. Somewhat amazingly, the company is still performing well, most likely because many businesses are entrenched into b2b subscription-based plans with Citrix that are pure gravy.

    Advice to Management

Acquire another innovative company, it's the only way you guys seem to be able to keep pace. It's time again.

    Cons

Better communication from leadership, more empowerment of middle management, felt like all the decisions were made by the same 3 folks which isn't scalable.

    Pros

Good company great product. Great executive (c level) staff. CEO is very nice and the rest if the senior executives are cordial.

    Cons

Too much middle management. Latin managers want Latin people working for them. The sr. Managers are very political. If you do not come from Cuba, then you will not like it. Many meetings break into Spanish . Plus the managers cannot speak English very well and you may not be able to decipher them.

    Advice to Management

Learn English, open mind, quit and move to Latin America
