I have been working at City Of Abilene, Texas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good location - the town is large enough to have everything you need and small enough to not have traffic congestion.

    Good schools

New City Manager has the right idea, if the Council doesn't run him off.

    Cons

Insurance has really gone downhill the last three years, to the point that it would be cheaper to just pay the penalty for not having it.

Small town politics has run amuck.

Salaries are on the low side compared to similar positions at comparable cities in the state.

    Advice to Management

People are leaving rapidly right now because of the expense and lack of coverage on their health insurance. City Council needs to put their egos aside and team up with some other cities to get a better group rate. The City also needs to quit hiring a consulting firm to do a study every time there's a decision to be made. That kills morale, because it tells the employees two things - that you don't trust their abilities and that you'd rather spend money on a study rather than salary increases or better insurance.

I have been working at City Of Abilene, Texas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most people want to work together and help citizens and each other. Hours are good but, overtime is not freely given to every department. Retirement plan seems fair and vacation time is generous.

    Cons

Seems like the organization is very top heavy. Funding is always an issue and medical benefits are high.

    Advice to Management

Add more "hands" and less "chiefs". Promote employees by contribution and not by attrition.

I worked at City Of Abilene, Texas part-time

    Pros

Great people, great summer job for a college student or High School student. Average pay considering you play games all day. Fun summer job. Always something different each day.

    Cons

Not enough hours, working in the heat, working with kids can be very stressful! Manager will treat you like you are one of the kids.

    Advice to Management

Not everyone working this job is 16 years old, treat summer employees better.

I worked at City Of Abilene, Texas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Cowokers become like familu
Feeling like you are making a difference
    Benefits, free doctor visits

    Cons

    Upper Management at City Hall
Citizens, they yell at you for every single thing
Lack of support from City Hall

    Advice to Management

I had a wonderful manager who gave his all to my department, unfortunately he had no support from his supervisors up at City Hall and that made his work almost impossible to do. We wanted to make a lot of progressive changes to move forward and City Hall wanted us to stay stagnant.

One of the best employers in the city. Lots of opportunity for advancement. Great entry level jobs available. As a dispatcher, you will get opportunities for overtime and shift differential.

    Cons

No pay raises for good performance. Dispatching requires schedule flexibility... overnights, weekends.
