I have been working at City and County of Denver full-time for more than a year

    Pros

*I have never felt more welcome or valued joining an organization. *Dedication to innovation, leadership, and employee development that puts private organizations to shame. *Colleagues that really care about the employee experience. *Rich benefits including a 5 year vest on DERP pension. *Fantastic communication and inclusion spanning all levels.

    Cons

No parking downtown, although ECO pass provided for $10/month.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on the people instead of solely the bottom line, and word will quickly spread that the City of Denver is an employer of choice!

I have been working at City and County of Denver full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Great work/life balance, supportive management, excellent training opportunities, and amazing benefits. Plus, most of the people I work with across the city are really great and work well with others

    Cons

Some positions have little to no advancement in their direct track. You have to move up in another track or team. Resource constraints are currently an issue.

    Advice to Management

Increase resources. Many areas are lacking resources and losing quality staff because of it.

I have been working at City and County of Denver full-time

      Pros

It's a complex system which is a double-edge word. Yet this does allow you to gain a lot of experience. I have never worked in such a large agency and it has been a good experience to figure out what is/isn't a good fit for me. Hint: I prefer slightly smaller. I believe there are personalities that likely do well within a government agency and can navigate the red tape well. You either need to accept or have a high tolerance...

      Cons

It's a big system- and things get lost. There is constant chaos in client's lives which is to be expected. Yet sometimes upper management reacts with policies and procedures that aren't empowering for workers, or the people we serve. It's also frustrating when supervisors scratch their heads as to why you aren't getting everything done. The answer is; this job/role is impossible. It isn't a bad thing, just the truth....

      Advice to Management

Take a temperature of your workforce. Some of the reactions and policies they roll out are completely outdated. While the social service arena isn't known as the most innovate and scaling industry, your employees are young to middle age and live and work in a vibrant city (Denver). If as an employer you don't remain flexible and have good work/life benefits- they will either go elsewhere immediately or within time.

I worked at City and County of Denver full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      Relatively decent health insurance.

      Cons

Do not work there. You will regret it. The management is what you would expect at a government entity - extremely poor! But the culture is even worse. Bad employees are not dealt with, they stay there for ever and are treated terribly to make them quit, no opportunity whatsoever to go to another department. Supervisors are the worse, they do whatever is necessary to cover their own behinds, harassment and bullying is...

      Pros

Great co-workers, quality benefits, many opportunities to improve the community.

      Cons

Promotion from within is not valued as highly as an outside hire.

      Advice to Management
