I worked at City of Anaheim California part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This department (One Stop Employment Center) provided a service to the public. My experience there was favorable overall. Minimal meetings was a plus for me.

    Cons

At that time in 2014 there was no security provided on site. We could call City Hall if needed and they usually came within 2 minutes. But unemployed clients can sometimes be difficult and an on-site security person would have helped. There is now on-site security.

    Advice to Management

My direct managers for the duration of my 10 year employment was very good. Did not micro-manage as some might. I felt that they gave the right amount of direction.

I worked at City of Anaheim California part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working in the Community Services dept is always a great experience when you want to help people.

    Cons

Everyone has a boss and each boss only seems to know what the boss below them is like and what they say is going on even when that boss is truly clueless with the day to day running of that facility or events.

    Advice to Management

Work with your employees and make your criticisms and praise based on first hand knowledge and experiences.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Great benefits, large reasonably stable organization. Some great employees and training but also some who do the bare minimum as expected with some civil servants. They expect a great deal of salaried employees but there are a few perks. Certain depts are stronger than others. Great benefits but scheduling and workload may prevent you from taking advantage of the benefits.

    Cons

There have been many changes in executive management and a divided council which makes for an unstable environment and creates for daily challenges in management of the city overall. Programs start then are discontinues as long term vision seems lacking as does leadership. Lack of communication, absence of organizational vision, Good intention and actually serving the community is not always a core value which is disappointing if you are someone who cares and believes in the importance of serving. Some staff abuse system and unfortunately culture seems to reward that behavior. They take advantage of salaried employees.

    Advice to Management

Put your programs into action and show actual kindness rather than merely saying it's an initiative. Team effort and team building needs to be emphasized at the top level as well as in the field levels.

I worked at City of Anaheim California part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice co-workers in a pleasant environment. Possible to become a union member, but if not, you still have "representation" on your side. I was part-time and received a notice that I was represented and rallied for regarding raises.

    Cons

I did not have a training manual, so it made learning the job much harder than needed. The position involved "codes" and to not have a key available let alone a literal manual is a huge short coming for a local publicly owned government operation.

Also, as mentioned above, it is a mixed-environment with union and non-union employees. Threats that a "grievance" towards a non-union employee is present. Take care in what you *do* to avoid this mis-used "behavior" by some.

    Advice to Management

Have Training Manual's ready for new hires. Especially when you suddenly create a new position due to work overload.
