    Pros

Fun time was had working with the kiddos and working on my coaching skills. A great way to spend the summer instead of working at McDonald's

    Cons

Erratic schedule. Sometimes I'd have a bunch of lessons and students and on some days not many at all. There were sometimes pretty big gaps in the day.

    Pros

I have a job and it sort of pays the bills. And I need 20 words so here are some more words.

    Cons

Upper management lacks experience and industry knowledge. Questionable decisions are made regularly and will eventually lead to epic failure. Favoritism at its finest for promotions (hence the lack of experience and knowledge at the top).

    Advice to Management

Take some responsibility for your decisions and your employees. Believe in your employees who have more industry knowledge than you, every organization is different and must be run differently. You have to truly understand your population, know what your real goals and values are, and tie your decisions to those things. Stop the favoritism.

    Advice to job applicants: RUN!

I have been working at City of Aurora, Colorado full-time

    Pros

Outside environment, lots of faces on day-to-day basis, vehicles apart of work day

    Cons

Senseless politics; some upper management positions lack experience and play childish games for power and responsibility

    Advice to Management

Learn the job of those below you, and take recommendations from lower head staff.

I have been working at City of Aurora, Colorado (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    * Stable, hard to get fired
    * Has an old fashioned defined benefit pension

    Cons

    * Very little opportunity for advancement - the position you are in today is where you'll be in 10 years
    * No defined career path - no guidance in policy or from management on what you must do to advance
    * Very slow salary growth - in a recent compensation briefing HR admitted that Aurora is lags behind other metro area cities in compensation; lags FAR behind the private sector
    * Stingy with training/education - no tuition reimbursement, training/education most often expected to be done on your own time at your own expense
    * Good ole boys culture - leadership takes care of themselves and a chosen few; hard work, education, and experience count for little if you don't fit a certain profile
    * Lacking in diversity - this is not the place to work if you are a woman or a minority; you will be pigeon-holed and frustrated, and at the bottom of the compensation scale
    * Lack of opportunity and diversity, and widespread favoritism has bred a "do the bare minimum" attitude
    * Low morale, tense "look out for number one" atmosphere

    Advice to Management

Provide opportunities for everyone that is willing to excel, and clearly define the path to those opportunities. Provide mentoring and invest in training. Increase diversity and bring compensation up to market level. Break down the good ole boys network and give more credence to education, experience and hard work rather than favoring people whose backgrounds match your own.

    Pros

The City of Aurora prides itself in the opportunities it provides to its employees. Yearly they have hundreds of classes in many different areas and they are available to most anyone. Their employees development is a top priority.

    Cons

Working for the government is very political and as such it takes a long time to get things accomplished.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to streamline processes in an effort to speed the length of time for projects.

I have been working at City of Aurora, Colorado full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits, decent pay, Steady paycheck, don't have to worry about being laid off. Most positions are Monday through Friday 7-330 or 8-5.

    Cons

Management is awful. Very heavy in upper management. They could care less about you as an employee. You're just another person. Have heard numerous times from management if you don't like it leave in meetings.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach. Management preaches core 4 but most of them don't implement it.
