I worked at City of Bloomington part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Got to work with kids daily. No paperwork. Leadership always willing to answer questions.

    Cons

Not very flexible on schedules during the summer since it is busy season. Very hot outside. Low budget due to the state and city.

    Advice to Management

Nothing really. You're doing a great job with what they are giving you. Maybe no hot sweaty cotton shirts.

I worked at City of Bloomington part-time

    Pros

You meet some of the best people at your job. When you work with the public, you never know who will walk through your door and some of these people are wonderful. I loved the goal of Parks and Rec, which was to provide an enjoyable experience for the people of Bloomington, which meant I basically got to play with people all day.

    Cons

Low wages, was told at my interview I had no opportunity for a raise or more hours in the position. I still accepted the job, and enjoyed it, but it feels bad when your employer relies on you having other income in your household to be able to afford to do your job.

    Advice to Management

None that I can think of so far.

    Pros

It's a good way to get some government experience and contributing to the city. There are some really good people and managers working for the city.

    Cons

Some of the managers are not very good at their jobs - they are not on top of things and lackadaisical.
A lot of the stuff was not ready for me when I started. Took days, weeks or even months to get all the supplies I needed to do my job even though they had plenty of enough time to get prepared for my arrival.
The atmosphere can feel very slow paced and boring at times.

    Advice to Management

Be a bit more accurate and plan better for new employees coming in. Admit your mistakes rather than skimming over them.

I have been working at City of Bloomington full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great pay! Great benefits! Great people to work with! If you're looking to help people and the community, this is the job for you!

    Cons

The stress of being a police officer takes its toll if there isn't enough stress management. The public doesn't always like the Police because of the media.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees more.

I worked at City of Bloomington part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They cycle through the tasks you preform so that it doesn't get mundane. Very nice about mistakes I made in my first couple weeks.

    Cons

Sometimes the patrons can get really frustrated and take it out on you.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you guys are doing! I loved all the activities we had to keep things interesting. Great experience.
