I have been working at City of Boise part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible and supportive in test preparation, great supervision and work environment. Flexibility to provide learning opportunity for entry level employees is good.

    Cons

Hard to advance or get full time work because of so many employees in same area with more experience who want the same full time positions.

    Advice to Management

    Provide more opportunities to advance

I have been working at City of Boise full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, I would venture to guess they are some of the best in the state as far as insurance goes. Good people, easy to get most things done.

    Cons

Hard to affect any real change. A lot of people stuck in their ways. Hands often tied by stakeholder expectations and red tape.

    Advice to Management

You can't please every Boise citizen every time. The City needs to focus more on the big picture and less on meeting every single expectation of them.

I worked at City of Boise (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The workplace culture was typically good during my four years (seasonal) as an employee. Other employees were competent and consistently worked towards improving their work and expertise. Safety and procedural training were both taken very seriously.

    Cons

Management became less competent and informed over time. I was also often asked to work 10 or 15 extra hours each week as our team, which was mostly composed of high school and college students, gradually returned to school over the summer. Wages and opportunities to advance are are fairly low unless you move to a managerial position.

    Advice to Management

Even if I made a small, inconsequential mistake while on the job, it felt like I was overly punished and criticized by management. I would recommend that managers reevaluate their workplce priorities and learn to set petty and personal differences aside while interactig with employees. The management was typically at its best when we were on good terms with each other.

    Pros

Good benefits and laudable effort to include employees in decisions about compensation. Some departments are just better to work for than others.

    Cons

Poor supervision / evaluations; low wages; disjointed direction from the top; little emphasis beyond lip service to provide consistency throughout the organization; budget approach is in a constant state of change, which makes it difficult to provide ongoing support for some programs.

    Advice to Management

Way too many irons in the fire. Decide what's important and focus on those things. Need to get expert help at standardizing business practices.

I have been working at City of Boise full-time

    Pros

You will be taken care of with benefits, reasonable work conditions and hours. They're making huge strides to make it a great place to work and I believe it is one of the best employers in Idaho.

    Cons

Communication in such a large organization is frustrating, superiors vary in their level of communication with their groups and other leadership groups.

    Advice to Management

I'm honestly not sure what to recommend. My knowledge of management skills is minimal so I'm not qualified to make recommendations...other than they may benefit from a higher level of accountability.
