Former Employee - Driver Waste and Recycling in Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at City of Calgary full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Salary paid vacation and benefits

    Cons

If you criticise management, regardless of how fact based and truthful your criticism is, you most certainly will have a target on your back. In my case management went out of their way to have me fired including fabricating evidence of misconduct on my part, and MYSTERY WITNESSES to my alleged misconduct, witnesses they have repeatedly refused to divulge during the Grievance Process which is currently ongoing. Corporate Paronoia at it's worst.

    Advice to Management

The individuals responsible for my termination are a prime example of the all too prevalent practice within the City of Calgary of placing some people in positions of authority who have no business being there. They are proof positive that in my situation and countless other City of Calgary employees who have experienced this blatant form of harassment, that Power Corrupts. They are the poster children for when Ego trumps Intellect. Careful What You Wish For.

I have been working at City of Calgary full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity for new responsibilities and personal/professional growth. Coworkers and bosses that want to do the best thing for citizens. Support for professional development.

    Cons

The political nature of public service can be difficult but managers and some municipal politicians try to shield staff from it most of the time.

    Advice to Management

Aim to increase the number of women in management.

I worked at City of Calgary full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Depends on the super or manager. If they are professionals with a habit of owning responsibility and accountability then it's a great place to work.

    Cons

If the super or manager is a micro-manager it is a frustrating place to get stuff done in a timely manner.

    Advice to Management

Reduce meetings, if you hire good people trust them to do their work and donot micro manage professional staff.

    Cons

ability to progress/move up limited, due to union structure and slow promotion culture from the top.

I have been working at City of Calgary full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Environment which supports your career development.
    Excellent Benefits
    Great Salary
    Positive work environment
The City works with you to get you where you want to be

    Cons

Compared to the private industry the city is a great place to work. Like anywhere you have to deal with co workers you wont like, but that's about it really.

    Advice to Management

Maybe try to stiffen the interview process? a lot of people working for the city on the lower end aren't very strong workers. Hire people who have demonstrated accountability in all aspects of their work and life.
