    Pros

Work-life balance. Equipment is up to safety standards.

    Cons

Extremely heavy cronyism environment present. Limited career development opportunities for qualified candidates. Foremen are not the most qualified due to past union practices.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate horticulture/gardener qualifications for the Urban Forestry business unit. Urban Forestry is not horticulture. Implement Arboriculture/Forestry knowledge benchmark. 9/10 Gardeners have never pruned a tree.

    Pros

Every citizen at some point in their career should devote some time with The City whether working full time, part time, summer, or even volunteering. You will gain an appreciation of how devoted and hard working these +15,000 employees are to making Calgary a world class city.

There is really no limitation where you can go in this corporation. If you do a great job, you will be identified for future job advancements and leadership opportunities. There are so many different types of roles in the corporation that everyone will have opportunities to maximize their talents. The City's management team is very supportive and encourages staff to apply for opportunities that moves the employee closer to their career aspirations.

During my experience with The City I had the opportunity to work with some of the brightest and talented people across the corporation. When compared to my years working in the private sector, I can say the ideas and innovativeness coming from City employees rivals any private sector company.

The City receives many applications, therefore it is a rigorous hiring process from the online application to the actual interview(s). If you happen to make it to the interview stage, be prepared to share many examples of your experiences to their situational interview questions.

Great benefits and pension plan. When factoring all the benefits and the work-life balance you will have, the pay is definitely equitable.

    Cons

As is the case with joining any new organization, some employees may take longer to adapt to The City's culture.
