I worked at City of Calgary full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Amazing benefits
    - Great work/life balance and every 3rd Friday off
    - Incremental pay increases if you're part of the union (independent of work performance)
    - Provides a really good insight into how everything works behind the scenes at the City. (citizens complain a lot about city employees not working hard, wrong we work our butts off)

    Cons

    - Lack of tools or resources to do your job properly
    - Backwards in technology (dated software, dated thinking, no investment in better resources for employees to utilize, you have to work with what you got)
    - A type supervisors/managers who thinks like dinosaurs
    - Absolutely no training available, they tell you to look up free books from the library or do free online courses
    - If you are looking to grow career wise, this is not the place to go to
    - They say they're working towards tomorrow's workplace but the reality is some managers want to see you glued to your seat from 8-5
    - Many town halls and meetings on organizational changes every few months or so, it really disrupts the real work you're supposed to do

    Advice to Management

Please invest in your employees, provide them tools, resources and training so they can succeed to do a better job for the city of calgary. If you're going to implement organizational restructure, please implement it properly so that it does not interfere with the real work we're supposed to do. Also take a closer look at upper level management who are hindering their employees, these are the people who are dragging the city down. If you're looking at working lean, then trim the bad fat.
