I have been working at City of Calgary full-time

    Pros

The City has great benefits and salary compensation. Very competitive. And as part of a large organizationa person can get a variety of experience all in one organization. You can move around in different areas and outside your current professional area.

    Cons

For professional communicators right now, it is not a great option. There is a lot of upheaval with the communications reorganization. Know that if you are coming g to The City, you are coming to a place where change is constant and things are very uncertain.

    Advice to Management

I'm not sure what to put here as I think they are in a tough spot.

I have been working at City of Calgary full-time

    Pros

The City provides structure and clear expectations as to what it takes to advance within the organisation which allows its employees to strive to be better a lot of the time.

    Cons

This early advancement also comes at the cost of reaching a ceiling quite quickly and so if you're looking to excel you might have to consider leaving eventually.

I have been working at City of Calgary (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Work and life balance
    Career advancement
    Flexible hours

    Cons

Some unionized co-workers are lazy and causing overall work morale to decline

    Advice to Management

Carefully screen staff before making them permanent. It's difficult to get rid of staff after they become permanent

I have been working at City of Calgary full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Location downtown, fixed work hours

    Cons

Dictatorial management, cronyism exists very strongly within upper management. Make life very difficult for unionised employees. Too much of a do as I say and not as I do.
Extremely top heavy management compared to private industry. Middle layer management could be and should be removed and departments/teams merged.

Management promotes incompetent employees into senior positions to protect their own backs so they do not look bad.

Message to HR. The employee survey is not to be trusted and achieves very litle. The questions asked make it easy for management to identify the employee. I was made to feel alienated by management and so were some of my colleagues. HR need to keep the results to themselves and use the responses to weed out bad management. The City could be a great place to work but it is generally not.

    Advice to Management

Definitely need to stop micro managing.

I worked at City of Calgary full-time

    Pros

Complex business environment that creates that provides some great challenges to work on.
Lots of opportunities to move departments
    Flexible work spaces

    Cons

Lots of bullying in my business unit from leadership.
Lots of people take advantage with long coffee breaks, long lunches and leaving early.
Lot of people in high paying positions that don't have the appropriate expertise for the role putting the City at risk and costing tax payers millions.

    Pros

Great Pay and benefits. Regular increases on par with cost of living increases.

    Cons

24 hour schedule and shift work Can get a little hard to get use too. Otherwise it's hard to find anything bad to say about the city.
