    Pros

Good benefits and accrued time off and vacation. A lot of programs to help the community.

    Cons

They don't train you at all. They just expect you to come in and know everything. Management is very snooty and demeaning if you don't know how to do something or ask questions. Horrible pay for what is required of you.

    Advice to Management

Be more organized with management. Work on communication between different departments.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at City of Columbia, MO full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Once you finish your probationary period the likelihood of getting fired is almost zero.
They pay you just enough so you will not quit to seek opportunity elsewhere.

    Cons

    Bureaucracy is bloated and inefficient.
Promotions are given on either seniority or favors being owed.
    No respect for military service.
Only people promoted are the ones that are not a threat to present management.

    Advice to Management

With the present management pool, I would have to give my advice to the citizens of Columbia.
Scrap the entire system, fire everyone and start again from scratch. As long as city government can get more money from citizens they will keep coming back for more.

    Pros

Fast paced, good people, music know almost day

    Cons

Attendance gets you fired even if you're one of the best workers and they promise training and never give it

    Advice to Management

Was about to advance to operator but hot fired 8 days before my probation was up right after new years...used me to get through the holidays pretty much

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at City of Columbia, MO full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great employees, decent benefits, flexible with sickness and vacations.

    Cons

low pay, poor management and infrastructure, hard to advance in organization, also a great record and education doesn't mean anything unless you know the right person.

    Advice to Management

More position diversity to allow employees to advance in title and pay. Management is overpaid. I was turned down for a job: "Well you are very qualified but no one here knows who you are."

I have been working at City of Columbia, MO full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Current City Manager has provided direction, which was needed. He espouses strategy over tactics, which has been adopted by most departments. Lots of hard workers with great ideas who are committed to the vision and mission.

    Cons

City Manager is a bit of a micro manager, though he claims not to be. He seems to step in things before finding out how deep they are, then refuses to back out. He promotes a "love it or leave it" culture, which is draining on morale. Pay does not increase often; knowledge jobs are frequently empty because employees gain experience and then leave.

    Advice to Management

Follow your own example; worry about big picture items and not details. Get the whole story before making a decision. Fire the compensation consultants - they have caused the very compensation problems they were hired to fix.

  10. "Intern"

I have been working at City of Columbia, MO part-time

    Pros

Are willing to teach you and help you learn, you have a lot of freedom to do what you feel is best for the job

    Cons

the freedom is great at times but there isn't a lot of direction... Sometimes you'll come in and not do much for the day

    Advice to Management

Have more structure on what the interns are supposed to do, we want to help we come in to learn and do things.
