I have been working at City of Detroit (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Restructuring in many departments. Room for advancement, open to positive changes and positive direction given to assist in the advancement of the restructuring of city departments.

    Cons

Pretty easy work environment. Great people to work with!

    Advice to Management

Nepotism is still alive and kicking within the upper administrative forces leaving little advancement for those who do not partake in the smooching of behinds or the giving of information that is absorbed then taken for personal gain without consideration of said source of knowledge. With that being said...there are a lot of qualified individuals passed up for positions, with an over abundance of individuals that are in positions that require more knowledge than they have who verbatim regurgitate facts aquired from a subordinate staff who receive minimal raises and little opportunity forr advancement.

    Pros

The best reasons i had for working for the City of Detroit was you had opportunities to learn which helped with future promotional opportunities. After that, the benefits were the best for about 12 years.

    Cons

Worst part about employer not is the medical, dental, and retirement benefits. They have lessened the pension plan significantly and you cannot retire if you've done 25-30 years of service. Also there is no longer any longevity payments for employees with years on the job.

    Advice to Management

Directors of depts need to listen more and react only after they've been around long enough to understand whats going on. Then they can correct issues they have within the dept.
