I have been working at City of Downey, CA part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

City of Downey has lots of pride in everything they do. Parks are a great atmosphere. It was my first job since I was a junior in high school. Have been working here for 6.5 Years and they have been super flexible with my schedule over the years.

    Cons

Pay could be a lot better. Neighboring cities pay their Parks and Recreation Department higher wages.

    Advice to Management

Make workers feel more valued and that they're having a big impact on the community.

    Pros

There were no pros to working here, the definition of a dead end job.

    Cons

Administration does not give time off, even when there are major health issues. Was let go because I took too much time off taking care of my sick mother. Called to say I could return but was told the hr manager wasn't in and would return my call. Never got a call back, got a letter post marked the day after I called, letting me go after 6+ years.

    Advice to Management

    Treat your employees like people.

    Pros

The ability to work hands on with the future leaders of the community and be able to guide them and mentor them into a fruitful future through a strong education.

    Cons

The programs lacked more participation in the school community and would have achieved greater success if it worked alongside with the school district.

    Advice to Management

I believe though it is a young and growing program, it still has many areas of potential growth and improvement.
