I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The City is trying hard to improve its culture but has a long way to go. Being a large organization with discrete Departments, some Departments and Branches are more successful than others when trying to live the corporate values.

    Cons

Inability to create a safe workplace where employees feel properly supported. Systemic blame culture, with no management accountability. Cowardly dismissal practices where the tough conversations are completely avoided.

    Advice to Management

Live the City's values. Work to embrace cultural differences and unique perspectives. Undertake meaningful, sustainable initiatives that actually benefit all Edmontonians and are not just stopgap showboating exercises that have no long term benefit.

I worked at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Wide diverse organization with plenty to learn and do

    Cons

Long term senior clerical staff with no education and an intense fear of change. Clerical staff run the department and dictate the negative culture. They dismiss the city manager and al of management... if you haven't worked there for 10 years you are deemed to be unaware and valued

    Advice to Management

Insist that all clerical, including accounting assistants move between departments every 2 years for at least 3 months per assignment to encourage development, understanding and to prevent complacency and silo mentality

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good pay, earned day off program, internal professional development opportunities. Most of the people are helpful and friendly to work with. There’s flexibility in the day, and time goes by quickly.

    Cons

Working in a large organization presents communication challenges, there’s always change in the organization and reorgs that cause some chaos, fear, and frustration. Some lazy people too who don’t want to be accountable or like to hand off work to others.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your staff, get to know the important work they do and recognize them for their hard work.

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Run like private. Good learning opportunity.

    Cons

Inefficiency prevails at all levels. For public servant pay, and precarious job security, and a private company like workload, you would rather work for an actual private company and have less hassle and more room for growth and opportunity. Upper Management is made of non-industry people from various private sector companies, who don't know how to run a corporation, goes to show why they are here and not working... for a private company successfully.

    Advice to Management

Listen and stop the re-org. Instill job security and family-like culture at all levels. Treat employees like assets (contrary to what it prevails as of now)

I worked at City of Edmonton full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The City of Edmonton has good benefits, good people to work with, many options for further development within the organization, a clear vision, shared among employees..

    Cons

The City of Edmonton is a large organization, with a fair amount of politics. Construction areas are mostly run by (white) males, and this has an effect on the people that they hire and keep.

    Advice to Management

I would develop statistics on employment, specifically within construction areas, and find out the reasons behind composition of the employee population. Work towards correcting imbalances.

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The City of Edmonton can offer a rewarding career path, providing a strong sense of actually making a difference in the community. There are good opportunities within the City of Edmonton for advancement.

    Cons

As an IT position within management, the total compensation is not competitive with the rest of the IT Industry. There is a demonstrated lack of equity comparing management positions across the organization.
