I have been working at City of Grand Prairie full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very secure job. Lots of freedom to be innovative within our field of work. Good benifits and time off with family

    Cons

High stress level that is natural to the job of law enforcement. Shift work based on seniority determines your hours you work.

I worked at City of Grand Prairie full-time

    Pros

My former coworkers, and knowing I was helping families find their lost pets, as well as helping animals find their forever homes.

    Cons

Management was very cliquey-- They would go out on the weekends and only tell their favorite coworkers about the plans. Those "favorites" would have inside information about different things going on in the shelter while the rest of us were SOL. Also, the pay was subpar considering I have a BA and prior experience. Honestly, if you have anything above a Bachelor's don't waste your time and efforts in this department.

    Advice to Management

Stop acting like grade school kids with the cliques, and if you have something to say about/to someone say it to their face and not to your favorite coworkers.

    Pros

Great benefits and and offers a lot of classroom classes

    Cons

Micro management, never got so tire of hearing, "this is how we always did it"! Policies and procedures are a decade old. It takes weeks to get heavy equipment repaired as everything must go through fleet services and then they will call out a contractor that fixes only what is reported, additional findings is another call.

    Advice to Management

Call in an expert to teach and train continuous process improvements so the city can get into current time zone.

    Pros

I was just a lifeguard for the city. It was a fun job, I made friends and learned a lot.

    Cons

If you aren't already in the "in" group it's hard to become a member.

"Can be boring and tedious but fellow library workers make up for it."

I worked at City of Grand Prairie full-time

    Pros

The coworkers are incredibly kind and friendly. Management was both strict and lax in the right ways, i.e. They made sure we didn't slack off too much by assigning non busy work when we looked bored. They also let us read/listen to music while we worked when it didn't interfere with the actual work. It was fun to help some people who would come in and ask for advice on how to make a resume or how to use Microsoft Word or whatnot.

    Cons

General responsibilities are to alphabetize and return materials back to the stacks, help patrons find things in the library, assign computers to patrons, and checking things out. It's very easy but it can get very tedious.

It was disheartening to see unemployed, lower income people come in and waste their entire day at the library using the free internet and computers looking at porn or other frivolous things instead of actively looking for a job. You may see parents berate their young children when they get late fees which is bewildering. Patrons will also berate you when they find out they have late fees and make a big fuss about it (especially those with very large outstanding balance) which will usually mean that management will either void half or all of the fees. This isn't fair to those with smaller fees.

This job can make you hate people.

    Advice to Management

Installing a program which could remind patrons by email or text to return their books would be helpful in ensuring a decrease in lost books and late fees for patrons. Return the program where patrons with late fees can bring in donations of food for shelters or for younger patrons to work off their debt by volunteering.
