I have been working at City of Guelph full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent compensation and benefits. Opportunities to grow and develop. Amazing coworkers and colleague's that encourage and inspire. Engaged community that values City services.

    Cons

At times difficult environment to direct change due to need to balance political aspects of City planning. At times some employees are resistant to change.

    Pros

Fun staff, good people. Fun at work for the most part

    Cons

The pay would be reasonable if the hours could exceed 25-30 hours a week. I have no idea what my union pay goes to. I was hired on being told union pay comes out if you work over 35 hours a week. My first staff training it went down to 25 hours a week and now we pay the union if we work more than 21 hours a week. When I say the union... I really have no idea what is being talked of. This union is a mystery body. A coworker asked if we we're unionized and an upper management supervisor running the training responded with No. So where is this money going to..... Questioning the employers knowledge, and the city of Guelph secrecy. 12.10 to guard and 12.72 to teach up to 5 children an hour and not getting paid for report cards is kind of sucky. Im told we get paid for the report cards but it has yet to show up on a paystub. Seriously never want to take another report card home to do on my personal time again. If I were a teacher making 40000-60000+ a year then it would be okay. Same goes for making lesson plans on my personal time. I love the work overall just not the half I don't get paid to do.

    Advice to Management

Be more open, provide better hours, and cut off at the standard 40 hours a week if you don't want to pay for overtime. Saying you can only work a maximum of 35 hours a week doesn't work.

I have been working at City of Guelph part-time

    Pros

very flexible hours, you choose when you want to work which makes its good for students

    Cons

employees are drastically under appreciated and under paid. Parents can be a hassle to deal with at times but that comes with the job.

Former Contractor - Seasonal Labourer In Parks in Guelph, ON (Canada)

I worked at City of Guelph as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very fulfilling, creative, and rewarding work - beautifying the flora in the City

Some coworkers were great. Friendly, helpful and fun. (I built some lasting friendships here)

Hours were great (7am-3pm), break times were generous and accommodating (for high heat days)

Some leaders promoted on the job education and mentoring (I learned a great deal during my time here)

    Cons

Seasonal contracts - no guarantee of rehire or feedback on performance( very difficult to become full-time or part-time)

Some coworkers were lazy, entitled, bitter, immature, and/or volatile

Management did not seem to care and was neglectful of pressing issues (i.e. employee conflict, public complaints).

Seasonal employees are treated as disposable, whereas full-time employees seem to be impossible to remove - even after multiple serious issues!

Seasonal employees pay union dues, but the union has no obligation to protect them or their rights

    Advice to Management

Become involved! Deal with issues that arise in crews before they spiral out of control. Inspect work sites and evaluate performance. Set aside personal bias and make decisions objectively. Explain your reasoning. Be transparent.

I worked at City of Guelph part-time

    Pros

Great working culture and supervisors, management good, fun and exciting job, good flexibility for students

    Cons

low pay rate for experienced employees, structure of pay system makes it difficult to work your way up to a raise and seems difficult for them to retain employees. Short shifts are too short

    Advice to Management

Offer better wages to more experienced new hires, or offer bonuses for instructors who teach high profit margin classes to retain employees

  7. "Lower than average pay"

I worked at City of Guelph part-time

    Pros

Working as a lifeguard at the City of Guelph was a really laid back job and it was better than working fast food for sure as a high school student.

    Cons

The pay was quite a bit lower the average when compared to other pools in the area considering the amount of certifications needed for the job.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay and more leniency with having to take time off. Having to find subs for an out of country conference was really frustrating.
