I worked at City of Hampton full-time

    Pros

Great work/life balance. Great Hours. Wonderful Director.

    Cons

City government pays less than the private sector.

I have been working at City of Hampton full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Finally seeing some employee compensation improvement, healthcare plan costs are being held in check,City is fairly well managed

    Cons

City has a lot of liability with public housing, etc. Need to replace at least one high school and some other schools SOON!

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to finance big projects like indoor pools and focus on core services--public safety, schools, and infrastructure.

I have been working at City of Hampton part-time

    Pros

The library has a pretty laid back environment with lots of room for new, creative ideas to thrive. Everyone gets a say, everyone gets treated with the same amount of respect.

    Cons

You have to work in your department for a long time before you're able to move up from your current position or make a lateral move to another department.

I have been working at City of Hampton full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The customers are wonderful and you get a feeling that the work you do is fulfilling.

    Cons

No promotional opportunities, and a low pay grade as comparable to other management positions.

    Advice to Management

Paying higher, especially at the lower staff levels will help with incredibly high turnover. Allowing overtime to the staff that works hard daily will encourage them to continue, and to offer more even if we are unable to pay at a higher rate.

I worked at City of Hampton full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Serving your community, camaraderie, and an overall sense of purpose.

    Cons

Officers haven't had a pay raise since 2007. As a new hire, I was making substantially more than the veteran officers who trained me.

    Advice to Management

Show you care for these great officers

    Pros

Most holidays off. Retirement, benefits, stability, vacation and sick time can build up.

    Cons

Pay could be better. It isn't horrible but the amount of work that you have to get done, it should be more.

Had fun working with the children, getting to know my coworkers better was a plus. Short work hours

    Cons

Short work hours, low pay for the work that you do.

I have been working at City of Hampton part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Awesome experience, nice opportunities for growth, good benefits, my department's management does a good job working with everyone and spreading information.

    Cons

Other city departments NEED to do a much better job at communicating with the 311 Call Center. 311 is where most of phone calls come and without good communication from city departments, 311 can't do their job at providing good infomation. City council makes decisions without thinking about how the decisions would affect Hampton's citizens.
