I have been working at City of Hope full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reasonable pay, benefits, and growth opportunities. Compassionate providers and patient-centric environment. Organization going through transformation to improve the patient experience. People who work here like their job.

    Cons

Underhanded and unethical leadership in patient access. Huge politics. There are constant changes in management which provides no stability to employees. Lead by fear, which fosters a hostile work environment.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to leaders and retaliatory actions against employees.

I have been working at City of Hope full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Magnificent mission and the opportunity to work with some of the most gifted, hard working, motivated, and inspiring, staff, clinicians, researchers in cancer and diabetes care.

Company invests in employees. Hosts several wellness activities from on site yoga, picnics, etc as well as learning and professional development week, tuition reimbursement (not alot but it helps), etc

Newly revived focus on a culture of service and ownership which although scary for many is encouraging employees to step up and help improve their areas.

    Growing investment in management development.

    Good place to work.

    Cons

Vacation for new non- managers is meager.

Health benefits are adequate but don't compare to other large employers.

Career paths are not clear for staff, and require staff to be particularly industrious or to be willing to leave their workgroup to rise in the organization. This isn't necessarily unique to this environment, but it would be ideal if career paths were better defined for most disciplines so to both help staff continue to grow their roles and contribution and also allow departments to keep their high performers.

No standard telecommuting or flex work policy. Some departments and managers offer it, some don't. In this day and age, more flexibility among knowledge workers is expected.

    Advice to Management

Continue to invest in staff and to transform the company to maintain leadership in our space.

I have been working at City of Hope full-time

    Pros

Great opportunity to feel you make a difference, regardless of reality.
Excellent people working in down-level management.
    Hiring for now.
If you are a Project Manager with a pulse, come on down!

    Cons

Self-Absorbed Chief Officers incompatible with life.
Major Reduction in workforce on horizon in 8 to 12 months.
Greed-fueled Incompetence ignores pernicious corruption amongst vendors. Accenture owns the place. No path to foster and support in-house talent.

    Advice to Management

Cease blaming your workforce for project creep caused by delusional deadlines. Prepare for MAJOR initiative failure. Focus on Patient care and not bed turnover.

I have been working at City of Hope full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

City of Hope has a friendly, collaborative environment and state-of-the-art technology. Research primarily focuses on cancer and diabetes, and we have translational projects through the hospital due to our close ties with the doctors.

    Cons

As a graduate student, the hours we work nights and weekends are expected despite lack of compensation.

    Advice to Management

Tell people who work in the hospital that we have a PhD program on campus through the research institute (many of them have no idea).

    Pros

Nice Co-Workers, everyone is encouraging and willing to help if you want to further your education. Starbucks gives employees discounts and also the cafeteria. Beautiful campus. A great opportunity to start off a nursing career or any other career that you decide in health care

    Cons

Benefits high for part time employees. A lot of favoritism between nurses. Lack of leadership, most employees feel entitled as if they can do anything and not get caught.
