I have been working at City of Indianapolis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Hours are really flexible. The youth are fun to work with. Networking opportunities.

    Cons

No pay raises. No overtime. Turnover rate is high.

    Advice to Management

    Pay raise.

    Pros

    - Fun job
    - Great way to give back to the children in the community
    - Well educated and friendly staff (they were like family to me)

    Cons

    - Pay isn't great; however, there is a lot of work involved
    - Constant trainings for a seasonal job (9 month job)

    Advice to Management

At the time of employment, I was a college student looking for a part-time job. It was challenging enough to do all of my assignments on top of having to do weekly lesson plans like I was a teacher. Also, many of the activities in the program were things that required some research and time to try the activities out before presenting them to the kids.

As a full time student, I just didn't have the time to fully commit to preparing for such activities, and I often felt like I was letting the kids and staff down. This should be brought up in the interview and training processes so that potential employees know what they're getting into. It also wouldn't hurt to pay a little more for the amount of work that is required!

    Pros

Will learn a lot of information you won't find in a normal internship.

    Cons

Can be very unstructured and unorganized. A lot of wasted time.

    Advice to Management

A little more structure and organization for interns would be helpful.

I worked at City of Indianapolis full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked for some really good people at times, also known racist(who got fired)!

    Cons

Management was all over the place! The political environment is a total bummer, the back and fourths across party lines can be maddening!

    Advice to Management

Hire more employees, instead of loosing good ones to being overworked!

    Pros

Forward thinking, outside of box strategic development. Knowledgeable staff that cares about its service to the citizens. Competitive pay compared to other cities, depending on position.

    Cons

Political climate changes affect everyday business and forward progress for program implementation and development. Administration changes will affect departmental goals and focus.

    Advice to Management

Develop staff and work on team building, since City does not give raises, find other ways to incentivize employees.

    Pros

Time off and insurance are the only pros to this job.

    Cons

They pay poverty wages. You can qualify for income based housing, the salary is so low. It is horrible. I have talked to several people who have been here for years and they haven't even had pay increases.

    Advice to Management

How about advice to the administration. Pay people some money so they don't starve!

I worked at City of Indianapolis full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Varies with the area and the management at the time. For the most part I enjoyed the people I worked with and the atmosphere. I really felt like I was contributing to my community.

    Cons

It's government. No matter how good or dedicated you are, you can't be non-political without risking losing your job when a new administration comes in.

I worked at City of Indianapolis full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Benefits, time off, insurance, I worked in probation for about 5 years. It was a good experience. Salary schedule based on years of experience. Bonus for Spanish speaking or Master's degree.

    Cons

Some micro-management. But that is to be expected with the position - a lot of 23 year olds get jobs there are PO's. Some of them are on a power trip and think they are better than everyone. Most of those people don't last or get arrested because they are jerks.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Keep working on helping keep the community safe. You're doing good considering the people that work for you and the people you work with.

I have been working at City of Indianapolis full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working on the start up of a new and improved Safety and Training Division has been the best experience thus far

    Cons

Our Safety and Training Division is only staffed by two people, so at times the work load could become overwhelming.
