    Positive Outlook

I have been working at City of Lake Oswego (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This is a great place to work for a number of reasons. The city takes care of its employees, we have a terrific benefits package, the community supports us, and we get the equipment and training we need.

    Cons

Some people don't like working here because they don't think it's busy enough and because we have a mentality of "no call is too small".

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to continue to support your employees and to continue to provide them with the training and equipment they need.

I have been working at City of Lake Oswego full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly, helpful co-workers; great health care benefits, good retirement plans; bus pass; offers some educational perks.

    Cons

The City and Council are very fiscally conservative. Even in a strong economy the City demands higher service levels without even thinking of adding staff. Dedicated staff struggle to sustain excellent customer service. Management doesn't care. There are no opportunities for career advancement. Management blames it on the union agreement but that is a lame excuse. New positions can and should be created to reward employees with leadership, added responsibilities, management skills. The stagnation creates a negative atmosphere fostering stress-related depression. Employees tend to accept mediocrity based on benefits, seniority. Processes do not advance nor is new technology embraced. Process tends to revolve around the *deadwood* who do not wish to embrace change as they have seen their past efforts continue to go unnoticed, unrewarded while more work is piled on them.

    Advice to Management

It's going to be hard to attract younger, highly qualified employees. Create a framework of appreciation for your ace players, such as: encourage, support, implement their ideas, obtain new tools/technology for success and/or reward through career opportunities and pay so they can infuse vitality through leadership & by example. You do not value your staff or invest in their needs to succeed; instead employees are overloaded with work and any motivation to make an impact is pressed out of them. They become the government deadwood, stay for years, things don't change, new employees jump ship early or another round of cutting FTEs occurs. Repeat. It's so unfortunate. It could be better...a lot better.

I worked at City of Lake Oswego as an intern

    Pros

The people within the department were a motivated and encouraging group to work with. I was able to contribute ideas to the team that I saw integrated into final products.

    Cons

The political environment in which we were operating caused a lot of stress and created an uninspired, challenging environment to actually do meaningful work.

    Pros

Nice area with a prestigious name. There is also a Lake that is wonderful when it is not crowded and busy.

    Cons

The LO attitude is rather touch to get over. It would be nicer is everything was as nice as the residents think they are.

    Advice to Management

Requirements for positions should not be presented matter of factly. Just say: "These are our requirements for this position" and leave it at that.
