I worked at City of Mesquite full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The employees are some of the best people that you will work with. You will definitely have some good memories if you find your niche. Work is mainly 8-5 with an hour break for lunch.

    Cons

The compensation is lacking, the benefits are lacking, there is no upward movement within the city. You will have to stay in a position at least 10 years before you can be considered a higher position. Lateral movement is limited. Training at the City of Mesquite is almost nonexistent.

    Advice to Management

Establish a training regimen for each position, not a "learn by your mistakes" training. It's better to have a person ready for the job than to let a person fail and then terminate them. Review benefits and compensation. Do not have salaries at market minimums. Have better facilities like City Hall and Police station.

    Pros

The work is easy and the pay is good.

    Cons

Part-time staff cannot go over 20 hours a week.

    Advice to Management

Allow a better transition from part-time staff to better full-time positions.

I worked at City of Mesquite full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It was a great work environment with tons of memories. I loved working outdoors and getting to do a hands on job. There were plenty of hours available to work along with good pay.

    Cons

The cleaning is harsh after a long day but is well worth the compensation. One of the managers loves to play pranks which gets very annoying after about a week. It can get rough when dealing with angry customers. It can also be a very stressful work place when your under a lot of pressure.

    Advice to Management

Great job on relating with your employees but also acting like a boss when it is needed

I worked at City of Mesquite full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great and the environment is a fine one that works for a family life. Employee family nights are a great way to get together with others, and you can expect an 8-hour workday to be the norm. It's not uncommon for an employee to spend 30 years or more working here!

    Cons

The pay is low compared to other cities of the same size, and it's not uncommon for pay to be frozen for years at a time. Also, people rarely promote to higher-paying jobs.

    Pros

Exposure to a vast range of activities and work experiences. It is great for young professionals looking to get a lot of different types of experience. Senior level staff members are very supportive of junior staff members' work and professional growth. Senior staff members very strongly encourage and praise good work. It is a very fast-paced environment with many projects and ideas being thrown around simultaneously and offers a feeling of self-worth and deep contribution to a meaningful purpose.

    Cons

Presently, there are not many options for advancing or for promotions. The politics can be hard to grasp for outsiders, but this is not uncommon for those working in municipal government.

    Advice to Management

Thank you very much for the opportunity to grow so much.
