      Cons

Can be difficult to get hired as an external candidate because of civil service title requirements High tolerance for underperforming civil servants leads to more work for others Bureaucracy leads to low transparency and information-sharing Pay is not competitive with equivalent roles the private sector City workforce is diverse overall, but less so when looking at executive leadership

      Zero Equity on the Inside

      Pros

Opportunities to serve small businesses in a city where support is critical. Meet great people who really care about the alleged mission of this city agency.

      Cons

One of the most inequitable places I have ever worked. Active discrimination against Black people on the inside, even as Black businesses suffer. Actively work against talented Black folks who work there, and prefer to hire and promote young, while people from privileged backgrounds. These people know nothing about the communities they are charged with serving even as they are placed in leadership over initiatives and departments that are supposed to address the needs of those disadvantaged communities. Black people hired as window-dressing. I heard rumors they have had multiple EEO complaints filed for discrimination against them.

Great Job for a College Student

Mar 24, 2021 - Recreation Specialist in New York, NY
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

The flexibility in the hours you work are great, as well as the benefits you receive, plus the job is easy since it involves working with kids.

      Cons

Your shifts change as the seasons do, so you might be moved around to different work sites. There is no room for career growth unless you become a supervisor but that's pretty much it.
