I worked at City of New York full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are great people working there.

    Cons

There is a lack of steady, focused, organized leadership. There is gender bias across leadership.

    Advice to Management

Reassess the organizational structure, particularly a the leadership level, and pay more attention to employee moral and staff engagement. There is great talent in the rank and file who are not able to contribute fully due to the toxic work culture and environment.

I worked at City of New York full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I learned so much about how the City functions and why things are the way they are, what are the many barriers to change, how many different interests are all vying for influence. It was a fascinating and empathy-building education.

    Cons

Super frustrating almost always. Difficult to get traction on big projects, always had to be the motor pushing things through. When you do actually pull of a good project, it feels amazing though.

    Advice to Management

Figure out ways to engage all your human capital, don't just treat them like butts in seats. I'd say the City bureaucracy was operating at possibly 30% efficiency.
