I worked at City of Newport Beach California (More than a year)

    Pros

Great city to work for. Everybody there is very friendly. Would definitely work there again if I lived down there.

    Cons

It can be hard work because you are working with kids and running around and playing with them, but at the same time, it's going to be the most fun you've had at a job. You get paid to play at the beach.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Everybody has a positive attitude and it makes it a great place to work for.

I worked at City of Newport Beach California part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You get to work at the beach....Doesn't get much better than that. In addition, you are surrounded by a truly excellent staff. 99% of the people who work as seasonal lifeguard are enthusiastic, driven, and all around interesting. Nothing is more rewarding than performing your job at the highest level on a big surf, crowded, summer day.

    Cons

It is extremely difficult to become a full-time lifeguard in Newport. I believe you have better odds of becoming a professional athlete. The job really only exists during the summer.

    Advice to Management

    Keep the hiring process rigorous.

I have been working at City of Newport Beach California part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This is a great organization with talented and organized people. The agency is highly respected by the community and surrounding agencies.

    Cons

In the past there has been miscommunication and contention between management and the seasonal staff, but most of that has been rectified and now there is more cohesion in the organization.

    Advice to Management

Clear communication of expectations is paramount. We are a hugely valuable resource for this community and should be compensated as such.

I have been working at City of Newport Beach California full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

We will start with the benefits. Newport provides great medical, dental, and vision options to their employees. You have access to the pension plan. You get to work a 9/80 schedule, you are located in the heart of Newport Beach and get to enjoy the ocean breeze and perfect weather every day.

    Cons

There is a lot of uncertainty about peoples positions and salaries. The HR staff is very closed off from the rest of the employees making it hard to voice concerns and receive answers.

    Pros

Security, benefits and positive working environment make the City a confortable place to work. Exposure to a wide variety of "big city" issues and enough independence to pursue them distinguishes this city. Opportunity for advancement, if you're patient.

    Cons

Innovative relative to many other local government agencies in Callifornia, not the most innovative environment relative to the private sector. Political priorities too often reign over satisfying core responsibilities.

    Advice to Management

Administration is responsible for running interference on the politics that reduce staff's productivity and too few take their responsibility seriously, deferring to midmanagement to run interference. Step up.
