I have been working at City of Ottawa full-time

    Pros

Given the City's size, Engineer's are expected to have a working knowledge and skill set for various Civil components including: Land Development, Traffic Optimization, Capital Improvement Projects. Assignments and responsibilities remain fluid forcing skill adaptation. Will never have the same day twice.

    Cons

May be limited for advancement. Like many government entities, the ability to "move up" is limited to available positions/titles which are usually occupied by members for extended periods of time.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Continue being the supportive force behind staff. That support is much needed when constituents often do not recognize the effort.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at City of Ottawa full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The work schedule is flexible. Shift picks are 4x per year and there is a choice to be on fixed work, to cover days off, to cover no shows and shortages or to cover holidays.

    Cons

The Public is difficult at best. Ottawa is the town of entitlement. Management has a hands off policy on the application of rules.

    Advice to Management

Ditch the silos, respect front line staff, stand up to the public instead of being week kneed. Blaming front line staff hurts morale.

I worked at City of Ottawa full-time

    Pros

From what I gathered it depends on which department you work for but I was overall happy with this job and the organization as a whole. I worked with a small team and all were hard workers but work life balance was encouraged.

    Cons

As can happen with public service employers or many stable job environments there are people who have worked there too long and are unhappy, and can take it out on their coworkers. Nothing out of the ordinary though.

    Pros

Salary is comparable with the market, benefits package is pretty good including the variety of professional services that are covered, and the pension plan is also very good.

    Cons

The new online performance review system that was introduced a few years ago is confusing to use by both employees and supervisors.

    Advice to Management

Continue the good work with making the City of Ottawa a better place to work for the staff while serving the taxpayers effectively.
