I have been working at City of Plano, TX full-time

    Pros

Health benefits are reasonable. Vacation time and sick time are generous.

    Cons

They do not reward people for being good employees. All employees get a 3% increase annually if city council approves it. Performance means nothing to them. Current evaluations either rate an employee as effective or not effective. No incentive to be a high performer. That's if the department your in even does employee evaluations.

    Advice to Management

Start recognizing employees for the good job they do. Make employees feel appreciated and valued instead of taken for granted.

I have been working at City of Plano, TX full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The City of Plano has a very relaxed office environment and a strong focus on work-life balance. Direction of the City Manager and Council is clear. Generally, colleagues are friendly. The retirement and benefits are above average for a city.

    Cons

Low salary, lack of opportunity for advancement, lack of development opportunities, typical bureaucratic management structure (slow to innovate). The bulk of the employees at Plano are over 50 with many being unmotivated to embrace change.

    Advice to Management

Allow for more opportunities for new employees to get involved with the organization. Be more willing to take on new programs and challenges.

I have been working at City of Plano, TX full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people I work with are great. If it weren't for them I would not still be here.

    Cons

Favoratism, clicks, promises that never come true.

    Advice to Management

Don't promise what you have no intentions of granting to an employee. Look at your departments. Check them carefully for Managers that play favoritism to a few blessed people and the rest feel they are a dime a dozen. Us who show up for work every day and do above and beyond their job should be compensated for it not just told well I understand you've made many changes and have helped us greatly. I understand all your knowledge is worth a lot and that I would hate to see you leave but if you do, we will just replace you. Where does the loyalty ly in your company? I can tell you. With your employees not with your Managers. I see in many departments employees being passed over. Employees that are being told lies on a daily basis by their Managers. Managers should be nurturing to their employees. They should want us to succeed and they should help us succeed. They do this very selectively. And only to chosen few. Talk to your employees you might learn something and avoid law suits for discrimination.

I worked at City of Plano, TX full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits were out of this world and I actually LOVED my job.

    Cons

Management was not good at all. Horrible office politics and the court management was not employee friendly. They have no compassion for their employees or real life situations. Lots of favortism and if you are not in the group then you are not a favorite. The court management loves to write up for the smallest things that don't matter. Breaking people down constantly. High-high turnover.
Policy of only have 2 people off at a time was hard with 35 employees at the court.

    Advice to Management

Clean up and show compassion for employees. A little respect goes a long way.

I worked at City of Plano, TX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellant benefits, stable job, friendly staff and peers to work with. Staff worked as a team to do whatever it took to make sure the jobs got completed and meet deadlines.

    Cons

Continuious personality conflict with dept supervisor for over 3 years

    Advice to Management

When I had meetings scheduled with upper management for a one on one. It always seemed that the dept managerment always wanted more people involved instead of a one on one meeting.
