I worked at City of Renton part-time

    Pros

The job provided good pay and hours for a part-time job. There were also opportunities for overtime on occasion.

    Cons

Job could be laborious at times, and was often very dull. Some of the trucks used for the job aren't in the best condition.

    Advice to Management

I'd suggest management looked into upgrading some of the older equipment, since it can make what should be an easy job somewhat difficult.

I worked at City of Renton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People there have been there for a long time, and they enjoy the work that they do. Management is very professional, and the work has little oversight. 50 cent raise each season you return, but that isn't saying much when you start at under 10$/hr. It's really hard to get fired.

    Cons

They hire too many uncommitted part time workers, which drives the hourly wage down for those are there more often. Basically, the pay is at least 3$/hr lower than what they should be paying. The older full time maintenance employees (25+ year vets), hardly work at all except for the bare minimum for the week.

    Advice to Management

Hire less part time workers who aren't committing to work full time during the summer, and bring the minimum wage up to a competitive level. This may weed out the derelicts that often get hired seasonally.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at City of Renton full-time

    Pros

    Adequate benefits, facilities. Nice location.

    Cons

Minimally interested in employee development and overall satisfaction; typical of government jobs.

    Advice to Management

Teach middle management how to manage, take care of, and develop front-line employees.

    Pros

Friendly people, relatively small scale so it is easy to see how your work effects everything around you. Overall, the job is not very difficult

    Cons

As said before, tasks can be easy and menial. Overall management structure is good but due to various city processes, it can take a while before things get done

    Advice to Management

As said above, there is a solid managerial structure but the fact that it can take weeks for a simple approval can and will deter people from working as efficiently as possible.

I have been working at City of Renton full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People are great, pay is decent, benefits outstanding!

    Cons

Highest levels do not listen to staff. Lots of poorly trained managers. Not flexible organization.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to what employees are saying. Quit losing good people because managers are poor but have you snowed over. Times have changed. Be flexible.

I worked at City of Renton full-time

    Pros

    Great on-going training.
    Work with your peers.
The leadership positions were hired on merit and experience. People were promoted in a very professional matter despite being a seasonal job for high school and college aged kids (there were some exceptions to the age range.)
LOTS of breaks. Life guards would get at least 15 minutes of down time per hour on busy days (sometimes 30 minutes of down time per hour. There were some light cleaning duties that needed to be done but most of it was inside the locker rooms and the like.)
GREAT PAY! For a seasonal job when home from college it was the best!
    Great co-workers.
The patrons. There were some regulars who absolutely loved the park and everyone who worked there. They made an effort to get to know us.

    Cons

Not enough hours for some life guards.
Expectation to workout without pay on some occasions.
City of Renton higher-ups who didn't have any idea how water recreation sites work had strong opinions on how we should do our job which made NO sense at times.
