I have been working at City of Sacramento full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn and great bunch of guys to work with.

    Cons

Facilities could use more hands on job specific training. There are a lot of opportunities to learn business and management skills but trade specific is lacking.

    Advice to Management

Incorporate cross training between disciplines to allow a better understanding for each craft so they can better diagnose and service each job.

I worked at City of Sacramento part-time

    Pros

Great team, fast paced, fun, you're always learning! Loved the people I worked with.

    Cons

Hard to make changes, slow to promote. In the position you're always the messenger and so sometimes you have to give really bad news and people thing it's your fault.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to your staff, work with them to solve issues.

I have been working at City of Sacramento full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Many of the individuals with whom I work with are outstanding employees that go above and beyond for little recognition and no financial incentive, aside from remaining employed. The pension is the only benefit that is worthwhile.

    Cons

The City of Sacramento negotiates contracts with various unions for pay raises and as part of this process, the City engages in practices that essentially grinds down the pay of their employees over time. For example, over the last decade I have received 1.5% in net pay raises. I've received four raises total, but the City has demanded that employees pay more towards their retirement contribution or taken away other pay incentives. Now, most of us have heard of this thing called inflation, which is about 2% a year for the last ten years. Even without the effect of compounding, I've lost a nominal 8.5% in pay over the last decade.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating the King like royalty and your employees like expenses.

I have been working at City of Sacramento full-time

    Pros

Love working for the City of Sacramento. The City takes care of you - great benefits. A lot of camaraderie. Challenging. No day is the same.
Affords an opportunity to grow your network.

    Cons

Some positions do not have ability to move up. If you would like to make a career out of a job at the City, I would suggest looking at something with possibilities for advancement.

This job also requires working a lot of nights and weekends.

The people within the city are overall good to work with.

    Cons

The entire city is too political , hypocritical and the management style is to lead thru fear. It is not a positive environment. The crazy's are running the asylum....Never received a raise in 8 years and had mandatory furloughs for the first 4 years.
