I worked at City of San Bernardino part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It can be very rewarding as you get to work with children, the elderly and the disabled. They're willing to work with you when it comes to scheduling. Great for first time job seekers.

    Cons

Only the top tier employees are fulltime, no exceptions. There's a disconnect between management and labor which results in a military style hierarchy where orders are to be followed without question or comment. Very little room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Remember that employees aren't just a resource to be exploited

I worked at City of San Bernardino part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You'll learn how to work and deal with working with people in the public sector.

    Cons

In the time period that I worked there, everything was a "con".

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with dignity and some respect. The lowest moral I've ever seen in a work environment.

I worked at City of San Bernardino part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Employer willing to offer better than market rate for the right employees.

    Cons

Very strict work schedule. Heavy workload and no leniency. The City has a backlog of about 6 months on everything. Management provides no assistance and is usually absent.

    Advice to Management

Don't offer high starting salaries, if you really can't afford it. This city needs to know its place. City is decrepit like its policies. Mayor and City Council want this City to be like South Orange County. Not Happening. Upper management is constantly arguing with each other. My advice: Fire all the managers and let the County take over.

I worked at City of San Bernardino full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, before they went bankrupt! The majority of city employees were friendly and did an excellent job.

    Cons

The appointed and elected officials of the city are the ones who caused the bankruptcy by their actions toward one another. No business person wants to bring a new business into a city with so many restrictions and such a volatile city council!

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your employees and listen to them. They are the ones who know what is going on in their department and with staff.

I have been working at City of San Bernardino full-time

    Pros

Most co-workers were great to work with. Expected morale to be lower based on circumstances but than wasn't the case. 4/10 schedule was a nice perk. Never had issues taking needed time off. Very flexible.

    Cons

Pay and benefits not comparable to the local market. Saw no room for advancement or opportunity for growth. Top heavy management. Not much middle ground. Most processes are ARCHAIC! Carbon forms are still used. Paper time sheets! Not much done electronically which is such a backward environment now. Lots of turnover so many employees are new and don't seem to have a good handle on what they are doing. Lack of consistency.

I have been working at City of San Bernardino part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people would be the one good thing about working for the city.

    Cons

There are so many downsides to this position. First off the pay is ridiculous the job listing says starting between 9.75-12.50, you'll start and stay at 9.75. When you are hired on know that there is no room for advancement and you will never get a raise with the grant funded programs. The office is in a very bad/dangerous location. Racist patrons, drug addicts, homeless, sexual predators, and mentally ill are who you will be working side by side with, it actually gets a little scary. Police never come when called to a city site, ridiculous! The weather INSIDE can be anywhere from 88 degrees to in the low 60s depending on if someone stole the air conditioner parts on the roof. Upper management is very poor. They know nothing about what goes on within the department. Also, when you are part-time you will be treated as such. Don't ask any questions or give any input as you are only part-time and easily replaceable.

    Advice to Management

No advice. There is no hope.
