I have been working at City of San Diego, CA part-time for more than a year

      Pros

Great co-workers, pay is pretty good. Flexible schedule.

      Cons

Small Staff numbers at some branches, which is do-able, but a lot of outreach and programming is expected despite the 19 hours you get per week. Especially when you end up doing a lot of clerk responsibilities as well as regular librarian duties. Some of the branch buildings are in really rough shape.

      Advice to Management

Stop expecting the same results, programming, and outreach, from every branch despite their differences in community needs, staffing, and building capabilities. Allow branches to evaluate their own community’s needs and what each branch can handle without staff burnout.

I have been working at City of San Diego, CA full-time for more than 19 years

        Pros

Large organization with various work experience opportunities

        Cons

Favoritism is rampant, Pay is very low for hours required, harassment, retaliation, discrimination and lack of Diversity commitment is pervasive! pay is low, pensions are gone, staff turn over is high throughout all ranks. Short sided selfish goals not in the best interest of the people we represent.

        Advice to Management

Overhaul the system. Survey everyone in the organization anonymously so that swift changes can occur. Bring back the diversity training and truly embrace diversity as a core value. Look at the big picture after this mayor leaves and beyond. Overhaul HR, EEO and Personnel Departments!

        Pros

Fulfilling and meaningful work. I feel accomplished and appreciated at the end of the day. The Cit's vision is something that you can truly take on as your own.

        Cons

The pay could be a lot better. The City should require mandatory flex schedule options (only certain Departments allow currently).
