    The Highs and the Lows

    Mar 22, 2022 - Program Manager
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Generally working with talented and dedicated civil servants (especially on the unclassified side). Good benefits, and salaries are starting to become more competitive. Lots of promotional opportunities and room for advancement once you've made your mark - good work is generally noticed quickly and rewarded. Build up PTO quickly, and generally flexible with WFH or other hybrid setups.

    Cons

Turnover at the executive level can be really high which can cause lack of direction/leadership. Most departments are short-staffed, so workload can become an issue - especially when projects have tight turn-around times. Even though salaries are getting better, City of SD still pays less than other public agencies throughout the region. Priorities can change at whim (a lot elected officials have short-term goals/thinking). Some city facilities are really outdated and not pleasant to work in.
