I worked at City of Santa Barbara

    Pros

Great management that shields lower staff from political bullets. No surprises to throw you under the bus. Lots of people who are there to help you answer questions. Hardworking colleagues.

    Cons

Didn't focus too much on professional development. Using antiquated technology.

    Advice to Management

Ask staff where they want to get to professionally and help map out a pathway to get there. Pay attention to ways technology could make the job simpler and more efficient.

I have been working at City of Santa Barbara full-time for more than 19 years

    Pros

Great Staff who truly care about the community they serve A culture that values ethics over profit, and being fiscally responsible with the public's money Excellent pay and benefits 50% of Executive Management team are women Investment in staff - the City Leadership Academy grooms existing staff for future leadership positions and seeks to promote from within whenever possible.

    Cons

Public Agencies cannot create new jobs or promotional opportunities as easily as the Private Sector can.

I have been working at City of Santa Barbara full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Management is, for the most part, very accessible. There is a strong desire to develop talent within and promote from within where possible. People are friendly and caring.

    Cons

Most of the cons are related to working in government, not necessarily specific to the City of Santa Barbara. With government comes limited funding and therefore limitations in general. Working against public perception of what they feel is a "typical government employee" can also be frustrating. And the uncertainty of the public pension system is a little unnerving.

I have been working at City of Santa Barbara full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

I'm fortunate to be working in a field that encourages people to recreate, play outside, and have fun! The Parks and Recreation Department has a very broad range of responsibilities and ways in which it touches the community and it is a pleasure to be a part of the management team to deliver excellent programs and services to those who need and want them. I work a 9/80 schedule and the benefit of this cannot be underestimated....

      Cons

The Public sector can be a slower moving, more conservative place to work for often very good reason. It can take some time to manage the transition from Private Sector employment, but definitely worth it if you can. Rigid pay and benefit structures can make it difficult to attract and retain talent. Living is SB is very expensive.

I have been working at City of Santa Barbara part-time for more than 19 years

        Pros

I really enjoy the people I work with in various divisions and departments of the City. Some of us occasionally play sports, exercise, and even play music together on our lunch breaks. I also get to work with a wide variety of the public, including architects, contractors, engineers, real estate agents, developers, home owners, etc. In a relatively small City, it's a neat opportunity to be connected to so many different...

        Cons

There are not always opportunities (job openings) to move "upward" in the organization, so sometimes people feel stuck in their positions. The health care benefits for covering families are not currently affordable for many, however, individual plans are still reasonable. There is probably some inconsistency in how managers relate to their staff throughout the organization. I've always felt lucky to be supported by...

I have been working at City of Santa Barbara full-time for more than 19 years

        Pros

The City of Santa Barbara is an amazing place to work. I get to work in a supportive environment where people truly care about the work that they do. I get to work on projects that have an impact on things I care about and with people who I respect and enjoy working with. I enjoy my projects, coworkers, work schedule and work environment and would not find the secure benefits and pay I also appreciate anywhere else for...

        Cons

I am at the top of my pay scale for my position, but then again I want to say I am paid fair for my work and with benefits included I would not consider another position. I have found my home here.
