I have been working at City of Santa Clara full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people, nice environment, and depending on your supervisor, great opportunities for growth and personal development. Management is working towards being more transparent with the community, which is a plus.

    Cons

Some people are set in old operational procedures, which inhibits progress and evolution. Although the City has recovered from the economic downturn, some departments still seem understaffed.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the transparency efforts; continue making your employees feel heard and appreciated to boost their morale. That is all.

    Cons

Didn't see much room for upward movement, but I expected that going in.

The systems used at the city whether they are technological or processes in general need to be overhauled.

    Advice to Management

Need to use modern technological tools to speed up your processes.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at City of Santa Clara full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Staff is friendly, areas are clean, and rules are well-enforced, but not overly so, resulting in an atmosphere where people can learn, have fun, and practically never have to be rescued.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement could be better, but the lack of them is understandable due to the limited number of management positions available and the same management staff returning year after year.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. The relaxed, stress free work environment is one that I definitely wish existed elsewhere.

I worked at City of Santa Clara part-time

    Pros

Family feel, small community, pot lucks, vacation time. If you like working with kids this place is great to work at.

    Cons

Low pay, hard to get over 20 hours. There aren't a lot of cons about this place, its a great place because it has a community feel to it.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work

I have been working at City of Santa Clara part-time

    Pros

Great working environment, friendly coworkers, (mostly) friendly patrons, some upward mobility. Flexible hours.

    Cons

Few opportunities for full time employment. The same work is being done by a larger amount of as-needed employees (benefits are expensive) who frequently work at multiple libraries. The work is being scaled down - librarians (~$38/hr) now often work with library assistants at the desk (~$25/hr). What were previously library assistant duties are sometimes replaced with pages ($10/hr). An overall decrease in funding for staff, and increase in funding for books/other materials. This is a trend for many libraries in the area.

    Advice to Management

Keep metrics on your current employees - some of them are doing little/no work while they're at work! Reward the ones that do; just because paying for staff seems expensive, doesn't mean corners should be cut at every opportunity.
