I have been working at City of Santa Monica California full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some great and supportive co-workers, good benefits, good salsry

    Cons

Upper management is not interested in supporting employees or creating a work environment that promotes productivity and a good work flow. They are more concerned with developing programs that win awards but only work on paper.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and get their input before you make decisions and policies. They are the people doing the actual work every day and they have some great insights.

I have been working at City of Santa Monica California part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Depending on the department you're in, it's easy and the coworkers are pretty fun and outgoing.

    Cons

Very short hours (2.75), no chances of moving up, no work during the summer, only compensated $0.25 each mile traveled to work, no stability, can be tedious, no benefits.

    Advice to Management

I think these positions would work best for college students or students in general, it just pains me to see people who've been employed under CREST for over 10 years still doing the same thing. Also, management can be shady, instead of hiring within, they choose to higher from the outside for coordinator or management positions. They also have the habit of hiring people they "know" or even their kids...yes, the practice nepotism here. Why can't they move any of the people who've been working for the company for 10+ years? Smart decisions aren't being made here.

I have been working at City of Santa Monica California (More than 3 years)

    Pros

City is financially strong and strives to be best and most progressive city government in Southern California. Good pay, generally up-to-date equipment, facilities and technology (at least for government.) Big organization with lots of opportunities. A number of staff who've left for upward mobility (City has a great reputation among local governments) have returned because City is a great employer. Very talented and smart staff. High level of integrity and professionalism.

    Cons

Can be bureaucratic and stifle rising talent. Too much toleration of non-performers, including lousy bosses. Civil service system can be rigid and inconsistently applied. Very demanding citizens and some parts of government are very political.

    Advice to Management

Empower and trust front-line staff. Recognize and celebrate talent, initiative and performance. Train and develop talent to promote from within.

I have been working at City of Santa Monica California part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I get to be outside and physically active playing a fun sport that is the fastest growing sport in North America

    Cons

Quite a bit of manual labor moving the nets from indoors to outdoors and inability to get more people to RSVP through my meetup group

    Advice to Management

Keep the courts cleaner and schedule more events indoors to reduce sun exposure.
It would be great to schedule more events at other city locations to get more senior residents involved.

I worked at City of Santa Monica California full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

As a city employee you have access to really fantastic benefits. My pay was fairly high and I loved being on a 9/10 schedule. (This means that you work 10 hour days for 9 days then receive every other Friday off.)

    Cons

The agency I worked for was highly politicized. And while that was interesting on occasion, it also proved incredibly frustrating when it meant that some of our decisions or guidance seen as slanted.

I was also uneasy about the little attention paid to ensure staff safety. City Hall is by it's nature open to the public which mean that every once in a while a seriously deranged person would walk in and cause a disturbance.

    Advice to Management

Offer regular training of what to do in a crisis and offer it employee wide. Create better ties with the police department to improve their response time. Although their headquarters was just across the street, it could take a long time to see an officer if you pressed the panic button to call for help.

    Pros

Location is important and pay rate is high and no layoff in 18 years always get cost of living. Strong union

    Cons

Cost of housing is reallly high. Too many purchasing rules slows down progress traffic is always heavy benigits are great but reduce over the last 7 years

    Advice to Management

Too many managers not enough lower level workers. Please meet with Lower level worker more to show you care about them. Make it easier to fire people that cause problem and waste money

    Pros

Fast pace and great environment. Warm and friendly employees and overall staff

    Cons

Planners do not answer their phone which put a lot of pressure on the Admin support who has to deal with customer who are upset that they can not talk to their planner

    Advice to Management

There should be a minimum expectation on the number of calls the planners should take per day
