I worked at City of St. Paul part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are flexible hours and a good retirement plan. I loved my co-workers and enjoyed going to work every day. If possible, I would still work here

    Cons

Difficult to advance in this role and very difficult to transition from part to fill time employment. There is a tendency to keep as many part time as possible

I worked at City of St. Paul full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It's a career that I loved. I loved working with a wide variety of people within the department as well as working within a diverse community.

    Cons

City management as well as the departments administration is only looking out for themselves and forgets about the people/employees who are the ones that come into contact with the citizens of the city on a daily basis.

    Advice to Management

You need to take care of those who are the ones who come into contact with the citizens in which they serve. Employees who are happy with good morale will spread that among the city, which in turn will give better service and happy citizens.

Management is great! Always willing to help you out, answer questions, laid back and a great place to work!

I have been working at City of St. Paul part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Many of the different Rec Centers that you will have the opportunity to work at have excellent communities and friendly people. I've also never experienced a problem with recreation staff. This makes for an excellent environment to work in - the community was one of the reasons that I stayed at my location instead of taking up other, higher-paying jobs.

    Cons

The pay is the biggest thing, coupled with the limited opportunities for advancement. Sure, one can eventually "work their way up," but it takes a long time, while you hold low-paying positions.

    Advice to Management

Look for ways to increase employee retention. Consider making it easier to advance up the ladder, so people don't feel "stuck" in their current positions.

I have been working at City of St. Paul full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, excellent health insurance and retirement benefits.

    Cons

Improper distribution of wages for productivity levels.

    Advice to Management

Work toward department-wide cohesiveness. There is a disconnect between administration and field employees.
