I worked at City of Tampa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fellow employees are great to work with and many new employees are there to only want to improve services for the citizens

    Cons

Policies are sometimes ridiculous, so out of date and so inflexible that the management team at the top needs to stop and look at what is happening

    Advice to Management

Review what is going on out in the real world, look at where improvements can be made internally so we can help improve citizen services

    Pros

I worked promarily in the Municiple Building and found that everyone working there could be described as adding to a pleasant working environemt. Strangers helf elevators with a smile. Started conversations about the day and made little jokes about the weather and that sort of thing.
They decorate the building for the winter holidays and it makes for a nice environment.
I'm gay and found that my partner and personal life was treated as "normal" as everyone else s. Simple question about what my partner prepared for work, or did we have plans for the weekend were exactly the kind and tone of any other persons. While meetings might start with a Christian prayer - something odd to me after working in New York City for so many years - were Church and Business aren't blended - the degree of "Preachyness" that can happen in other offices I have contracted in around the Tampa Bay area was not present.
I believe that if someone where to belong to a non-Christian religion they would be treated with respect, which again I do not feel is the rule in work environments in the over all Tampa area. I worked with a few people that were "ministers" both here at the City of Tampa and in other places.
Mattress Firm is an example of a place that never knew I was gay - and several times when I was asked if they could pray for my sick ,other people actually laid hands on me. For example one man, a delivery person, suddenly pulled a vial of oil out of his pocket and and "anointed" my forehead while asking God out loud to protect my ailing mother. This would never have happened at the City I am sure.
They are also very concerned about improving employees health for the purpose of health insurance. How to quit smoking - walking more at work etc.

    Cons

I am not sure if all parts of the City are a pleasant as working in the municipal building. For example, I understand that the people who take Emergency 911 calls work in a very unpleasant building and I've heard it said they aren't given much respect by the emergency providers they work with.
I also worked for a very short time with someone whose power had gone to her had and it was difficult - but in the end it was handled by her supervisors discretely.

I know HR and the Training Department would like to see anything but helpful - brotherly treatment abolished.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice for contractors to be given a parting exit to ask about the experience as "observers." It would also be nice if people could have perhaps a chat with someone not in their chain of command twice a year to deal with some of the built in problems that might result when people run their area for years and are basically autonomous as long as the work gets done. Their is a greivance process - but why wait to get to that extreme?

More senior employees are retiring in the next couple of years allowing room for new hires.
The city has shown amazing growth and is constantly updating it's technology for the times.

    Cons

Pace of typical City government. Be patient and be assertive.
