I have been working at City of Walnut Creek California part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working in the Parks and Rec department for the city is an allover great experience! The people working there are always so nice, which is probably the best thing about it. The hours are flexible as long as you let your supervisor know in advance what's happening.

    Cons

The only downsides I could think of are some of the parents being snobby, and the kids being rude. But that's all part of the job.

I worked at City of Walnut Creek California full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers, beautiful city, appreciative citizens, good equipment, decent training, lots of opportunity for increased seniority due to high turn over.

    Cons

The city was known for terrible micromanaging in the past. Several lateral officers regretted coming to the agency. The inexperienced leadership is learning as they go. (It may be better now) The agency is small so opportunities can be limited.

    Advice to Management

Don't sweat the small stuff, you have great people.

    Pros

People who work there are awesome!
Hanging out with kids is super fun
great work hours (scheduled between 7-6 M-F so you always have weekends free)
    great first job

    Cons

Upper management can be biased towards office staff
Can also be overbearing at times and doesn't let older staff just run things

    Advice to Management

Feel free to give more responsibility to senior leaders and let them do the work for you. Be confident in your staff

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at City of Walnut Creek California part-time

    Pros

Plenty of hours and large roster with people looking for substitutions, so you can work as much or as little as you would like.

    Cons

As with any lifeguarding job, it can get boring sitting on the stand watching people. Especially if the pool is relatively empty. Morning shifts start very early.

    Advice to Management

Practical training was very useful, continue to emphasize practical over book training. In particular, staged scenarios where the lifeguards had to just observe and react with no help from the managers was the most useful

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at City of Walnut Creek California full-time

    Pros

Walnut Creek encourages people to bring new ideas to government. Co-workers are generally very friendly and co-operative. It's also an organization where half the leadership is women, which is encouraging to see an organization that supports equality.

    Cons

The ambitious nature of the organization can sometimes make it difficult for employees to maintain a work life balance.

    Advice to Management

It's time for the organization to modernize their benefits and offer paternity leave.
