I worked at City of West Palm Beach part-time

    Pros

Great hours. One of the higher paying pool life guarding jobs in Palm Beach. At the time the people where very friendly.

    Cons

Pool is not in the best area. There are gun shots every now and again that will keep you on your toe. Not much around the pool to eat for a lunch break.

    Advice to Management

The management has changed a lot since I have been there, so I do not give too much advice to the management.

I have been working at City of West Palm Beach full-time

    Pros

The people within the department are good, honest, hardworking folks. Within City Hall they are trying to catch up technology, but leave the rest of the City behind on purpose. Because City Hall is the only one that matters, because if you make them happy it’s much easier to climb up the latter of suc cess.

    Cons

Only at the City can someone with minimal (to no) managerial experience climb from contractor, manager, director to a lettered title in less than 2 years. There are managers by title and there are leaders, a manager leads by fear and a leader instills confidence, your employees are not sheep and you are not a wolf so change your thinking. Maybe taking to heart the lessons learned in those management classes may help some become a leader, not a boss. If you only had a clue, that would be a great start.

    Advice to Management

The outside looking in has a great view, but being on the inside is tough. For the management staff, it’s not if you may get yelled at, but it’s what time today will she do it. It’s not all 1’s & 0’s in here.

I worked at City of West Palm Beach full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people below management level that know their field and just want to do their jobs. Benefits used to be better but I would say they are still passable. Having a retirement plan forced on you is actually a good thing.

    Cons

The management team that was competent and decent has left since the new director came in and thinks she is still in the Navy.

All the top talent has left and the place is in shambles, if current director hired in the end of 2013 is the director still look for a job elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Sack the director immediately or else you will not have an IT department left, just look at the number of staff that have left in the last 3-4 months. You cannot sustain a department that is hemorrhaging staff at a rate of 3-4 a month when it only had 25 to start.
