    Pros

Great people below management level that know their field and just want to do their jobs. Benefits used to be better but I would say they are still passable. Having a retirement plan forced on you is actually a good thing.

    Cons

The management team that was competent and decent has left since the new director came in and thinks she is still in the Navy.

All the top talent has left and the place is in shambles, if current director hired in the end of 2013 is the director still look for a job elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Sack the director immediately or else you will not have an IT department left, just look at the number of staff that have left in the last 3-4 months. You cannot sustain a department that is hemorrhaging staff at a rate of 3-4 a month when it only had 25 to start.

    Pros

Paid holidays paid sick and vacation

    Cons

The pay freeze for 7 years hostile work place and the lack of appreciation for the hard work the worker deal with the work is not hard its just the people you have to deal with on a daily basis i started with 12.98 and still making the same 7 years later

    Advice to Management

Value the hard workers and stop rewarding the lazy people because you drink beer together

I worked at City of West Palm Beach full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Good salaries and benefits.
-Nice facilities in which to work.

    Cons

-Very political environment--change of mayor--change of staff.
-No advancement or job security unless you are part of the administration. Constant fear of losing job despite excellent employee evaluations.
-Ineffective unions Union representatives are too busy worrying about their own jobs to care about those they serve.
-Code requirements and rules are meant to be broken if it will increase the tax base.
-Doing a superior job, following the rules and striving to improve the environment will get you laid off or fired.

    Advice to Management

Improve employee moral by supporting the workforce. Apply the rules equally. If the rules that were created by management do not work--change them rather than ignore them. Respect those persons working under you.

    Pros

Fast growing city, plenty of projects to work on, good management (in some departments). Overall a fun place to work (the location is great, right downtown WPB), and plenty to keep yourself occupied if you are a self starter. Very difficult to be fired (union system)!

    Cons

City is built on growth, as the growth slows, layoffs and project cancellations are becoming more the norm. The entire city centers around the building department and the mayors office, everyone is just there to keep that money making machine running. Very difficult to move up quickly through the ranks. Unionized system prevents "unfair" promotions; if you're working harder then others, it may not be recognized.

    Advice to Management

Please stop spending all the money on construction! You are going to bankrupt the city to fufill the mayor's dreams. Try to promote the stars more quickly.
