I have been working at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good focus on education, professional development. Solid work life balance for the most part. Genuine effort from upper management to find more work.

    Cons

Lack of work, variable workload. Decreased utilization because of lack of work. Lack of feedback beyond annual review. Larger projects often get bounced around with no consistent principal or project manager from year to year.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to grow through outside hires. If there isn't enough work for existing staff stop hiring more. Give your existing employees room to grow. If an office is struggling to find new staff, seek to move staff from within to more profitable markets. Also there needs to be more feedback to employees than just the annual review.

I have been working at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Diverse projects keep work interesting and the people are great. I've learned so much about engineering, ecology, etc. because of the interactions between practice areas. I enjoy the work.

    Cons

Everyone is forced to do business development, and your success in that determines your professional future and bonuses. This fosters a hostile atmosphere versus a collaborative one. The family feel is long gone, which is sad. Unfortunately favoritism is rampant.

    Advice to Management

Using your technical staff to market is a terrible idea and waste of talent.

I worked at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits for consulting
Willing to spend money to make money - you get the resources and training you need
Good multidisciplinary talent pool - you will have opportunities to work on challenging projects here
Support is available from other other offices when needed

    Cons

    Sales/marketing is completely on the shoulders of project managers with little help from corporate marketing staff;
    You have a numerical annual sales goal, and your success in meeting/exceeding it while also meeting your numerical utilization goal determines your raise/bonus;
Sales/marketing is the only track for advancement - no rewards for solid technical ability

    Advice to Management

Not every manager is a salesperson - a technical track for advancement is needed.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities if you are directly connected to clients and can demonstrate sales of services. However, staffing for larger scale projects (covering large geographic areas) represents a unique set of challenges.

    Cons

Profit center based model fails to support a culture of collaboration and resulted in several deliverables which failed to meet client expectations. The deliverables on large budget and large scale projects which are staffed across profit centers would benefit from a change in the financial accounting of performance per P&L (or office). Senior management encourages each P&L to operate as an independent profit center. Depending on the Industries, markets and Clients you serve, such an approach may hinder, rather than support, your technical and professional growth.

    Pros

Great team player coworkers. Good safety training. Good benefits. Easy communication between various disciplines.

    Cons

Not anything like several years ago. New management is driven by favouritism and nephatism. Hr driven hotbed of constant b.s.

    Advice to Management

Return to valuing and respecting the people who got you where you are.

I have been working at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Really a great company to work for. Managers and technical workers are one in the same, no separate tracks to follow. CEC works with a variety of clients on multi-faceted projects, in all different industries.

    Cons

No option to NOT be a manager throughout career, and some individuals are simply not cut out for managing projects, clients, and/or other people.

    Advice to Management

CEC prides itself on providing clients with high-quality expert advice, consultation, and other engineering services. it is important to remember during the hiring process, that if CEC wants to continue to provide high-quality work products and retain exceptional employees, they need to be willing to pay for those people with the greater experience and knowledge and try to keep up with market standards throughout an employee's career.
