I have been working at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, opportunity for advancement if you can stick it out. Plenty of work if you want to work 16+ hr days.

    Cons

Poor management, last minute rushed projects deadlines, no life outside work, reprimanded in front of others, poor planning, no guidance

    Advice to Management

People have lives outside work, be a little more thoughtful of their personal lives. Don't press projects on them last minute and expect them to cancel their lives. If you have to discipline someone, do it in private.

I have been working at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Diverse projects keep work interesting and the people are great. I've learned so much about engineering, ecology, etc. because of the interactions between practice areas. I enjoy the work.

    Cons

Everyone is forced to do business development, and your success in that determines your professional future and bonuses. This fosters a hostile atmosphere versus a collaborative one. The family feel is long gone, which is sad. Unfortunately favoritism is rampant.

    Advice to Management

Using your technical staff to market is a terrible idea and waste of talent.

Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. Response

    Jun 9, 2017 – Corporate Recruiting Manager

CEC has a defined career development model that outlines the path most employees will take from building technical skills early in their careers to being leaders in the organization. Competencies and... More

I worked at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Paid for training opportunities and for work social events. I had a really comfortable office chair. They would give internal promotions often.

    Cons

All about utilization and marketing. Raises, promotions, and bonuses are based on how much work you sell rather than the quality of work you do. There is no tract for technically oriented employees. This makes the managers of a practice group more competitive and not willing to "share" their clients. Managers bend over backwards for "their" clients at the expense of lower level employees. This means last minute (think less than 24 hours) weekend field work and having to cancel family plans. Wanted all employees to market, but wouldn't allow lower level employees market with "their" clients to gain experience. There was a huge lack of work, went through many lay offs despite manager insisting that employees shouldn't have to worry and work "was coming". Management would ask advice to employees about what would make the workplace better and then wouldn't listen. Work life balance was all over the place.

I have been working at Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good focus on education, professional development. Solid work life balance for the most part. Genuine effort from upper management to find more work.

    Cons

Lack of work, variable workload. Decreased utilization because of lack of work. Lack of feedback beyond annual review. Larger projects often get bounced around with no consistent principal or project manager from year to year.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to grow through outside hires. If there isn't enough work for existing staff stop hiring more. Give your existing employees room to grow. If an office is struggling to find new staff, seek to move staff from within to more profitable markets. Also there needs to be more feedback to employees than just the annual review.
