    Pros

Radically important mission Smart, smart team members Inspiring college & university partners Bringing useful analytics to hard-working students and educators

    Cons

It's hard work, but it's good work Not easy being one of the first to do anything - some uncertainty for sure

    Advice to Management

Keep at it! The students, colleges & universities you're trying to help are overcoming big-time challenges in complex environments--never think this will be easy. But never forget you have a talented team ready to take this challenge on!

I worked at Civitas Learning full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Civitas was among my best 2 experiences out of 5 startups. The perks and benefits were startup standards: health benefits, downtown location, flexible vacation, ping pong, snacks, beer keg, company meals, etc. The mission: Civitas' mission convinced me to come over from another great startup. Simplistically, Civitas is helping students finish their degrees. I heard the life changing stories from several impacted...

    Cons

In my opinion there are no exceptional cons. After working at 5 startups, what could be viewed as cons (RIF's, management course changes, org changes, investor changes) were not unusual. Startups are inherently risky and sometimes volatile. Questionable management decisions? Probably, but I've never worked with any executive that batted 1000 in corporate decision making. It's not realistic, and the current best path...

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Civitas Learning full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Mission and customers - Capable and close-knit group of employees - Flexible PTO and WFH policies - Excellent office space (that will change in August)

    Cons

    - Incompetent, prideful and willfully ignorant leadership - Low level employees bear the brunt of poor business decisions made by leadership (numerous rounds of layoffs while C-levels and VPs remain in their positions even though they're the ones making the poor decisions) - Company has a goal to "recruit and maintain talent" and "grow people and culture" but consistently demonstrates how replaceable employees are ...

    Advice to Management

Dear Leadership, Stop. Move away from the keyboard. Don't prepare a defense. Prepare to be receptive to what you read. Look through your company reviews. Notice the common thread? YOU. Whether you believe them to be valid concerns of employees invested in Civitas success, or the grumblings of disgruntled former staff who just want to watch the world burn, they still exist. But what to do with them? Ask yourself...

I worked at Civitas Learning full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Unlimited PTO, awesome coworkers, free food, good location/free parking (downtown).

    Cons

Leadership remains in power while the company continues to do poorly. There was another layoff that happened in February where about 25-30 people were laid off. The first major layoff was in May 2017 where 40 people were let go. They COO's consolation message was "it won't be as big a layoff as last time", while they dismissed employees back to their desk to sit around and wait to see if they get called into a room by...

    Pros

As everyone else states, your co-workers are great people and truly want to make a difference. Nice work location Stock Options - Wait No. The company strongly encouraged employees to purchase the options granted as “compensation for a job well-done”. Many did. The last round of “funding” was actually a secretive sale of the company, not a round of equity. CEO and other execs each got 6 and 7-figure bonuses...

    Cons

Management is rude, incompetent, and less than forthright with educational institutions. Products still do not work years later except for the ones they purchased in acquisitions. Departmental infighting No career advancement

    Advice to Management

Ask management why they thought it was honest and the right thing to do to tell everyone the last funding round wasn’t a distressed sale of the company but rather another round of capital injection. Ask them why they thought it was okay to take millions in bonuses while making every employee’s PURCHASED shares worth $0 without the ability to ever regain any value. Ask management how they plan to right the wrongs...

Free Lunch Flexible Schedule Great Mission

    Cons

CEO always has to be the smartest guy in the room. When the company ran into tough times he changed the treatment of his employees. Went through 3 re-orgs in under a year which included me seeing multiple people ambushed and laid off. Also included people being moved into positions that cost them commission money without any regard for their earning potential. No development or investment in employees Higher...

    Advice to Management

I actually believe that most people there believe in the mission but, culture is more than free snacks, a keg, and a town hall. Start treating your employees with the respect they deserve. You'll never achieve your goals the way most leadership treats employees.

I have been working at Civitas Learning full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Rock-solid mission that is inspiring and fulfilling! Long-term vision that pushes the envelope of innovation in higher education--which is not easy by the way--focusing on being more than just another tech vendor in the field, yet a partner and fellow thought leader focused on helping colleges and universities better understand how to best serve their students. The vast majority of employees are the "salt of the...

    Cons

Early success and quick penetration into the market brings about a lot of goodness, yet good learning opportunities also present themselves. While every new turn has not always resulted in optimal success (which is impossible, by the way), the leadership--on multiple levels-- has had to make difficult and unpopular decisions in the best interests of an evolving organization. Nothing about this is surprising! In my experience,...

I have been working at Civitas Learning full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Civitas Learning has been a great company. The founders are very passionate about improving student success given how important education is in improving everyone's life. They bring authentic credibility and high energy to the team and the marketplace. Too much success too fast early on led to some complacency in the past, but I am seeing a laser-sharp focus on more unified and intelligent solutions that connect people...

    Cons

There was lack of focus in the past with different teams working on their own products. However, the management team realized this and now we are working on streamlining and unifying our products for easier deployment and greater impact on student success.

    Advice to Management

Focus on what will move the needle on student success, which includes people and change management.

    Cons

The "mission" that the company and lots of employees tout is to get more students to graduate college using data science. This would be a great mission if it were true. However, the true mission of the company is that the CEO and the other co-founders found a niche in the market that they decided to capitalize on -- colleges were started to become willing to invest in ways to increase graduation rates and the Civitas...
