I worked at Claremont McKenna full-time

    Pros

Good faculty-staff relations. Collaborative cross-department culture.

    Cons

Campus focus on economics and finance creates a CMC-type, homogenous student body.

I worked at Claremont McKenna part-time

    Pros

CMC is filled with smart people and is always filled with healthy debate. People are super nice and friendly. It's very safe.

    Cons

CMC and Claremont is always in its own little bubble.

I worked at Claremont McKenna full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are probably good departments to work in, but Development isn't one of them.

    Cons

Poor management. Bean-counter mentality. Good at talking the talk, sounds good but sounding good is about as far as it goes. Turnover very high, nearing 50% in the last 2 or so years. The best employees have been leaving to work at better places. Not all who leave are replaced, just push more work onto someone else.

    Advice to Management

Bring in more integrity and managerial skill at doing more than just sound good, expecting everyone to pretend it is.

    Cons

I worked at Claremont McKenna full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice campus and location. Exceptional students. Could have been a great place to work. Glassdoor has Pamela Gann down as the CEO. She is long ago stepped down more's the pity.

    Cons

I'm with the person who said CMC operates on a "lean staffing" model at the lower levels. Staff leaves, you just get to do more work when they aren't replaced. Like it's expected and you're not supposed to notice. This might be acceptable especially if it were only temporary for a few months if salaries were commensurate with demands, but they're not.

    Advice to Management

    Advice to Management

In general in the department where I worked, there didn't seem to be a correlation between pay and the amount of work and responsibility piled on the lower level staff. It would be nice if there were an effort to pay staff what they're worth rather than put so much effort into getting a new hire at the lowest possible rate way below the norm for other comparable places. For example, I left for basically a similar job except that it had hugely less demanding in terms of work load and it paid $15,000 more a year with as good, actually better, benefits. Go figure.

I have been working at Claremont McKenna full-time

    Pros

Reduced teaching load, some great students. Campus and near by town is very walkable.

    Cons

The administration is completely against the faculty and the students. Unreasonable expectations of new faculty.

I worked at Claremont McKenna full-time

    Pros

Most everyone apart of this community is smart, dedicated, diligent, and personable. It's an exceptional place with manifold opportunities for professional development. The students are also exceedingly bright and a joy to work with.

    Cons

CMC has long operated on a "lean staffing" model, so everyone tends to have too much on their plates. This would be acceptable if salaries were commensurate with demands, but they're not. Also, I think the current leadership lacks direction, so the ship feels somewhat rudderless.

    Advice to Management

If you want to increase retention, either increase staffing or pay the current staff what they're worth.
