    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Clark Patterson Lee full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Not a "corporatey" feel. I come in not feeling like just a number. Feels like I'm working with a family.

    Cons

The PTO policy is a little iffy....I do not think it is fair that PTO is used on holidays. Holidays are there to be spent off of work without a penalty (taking away from my PTO account)

    Advice to Management

Be a little more open about advancement within the company and if it is possible.

    Pros

Pros: There are plenty of great people at Clark Patterson

    Cons

Cons: None of them are in upper management.
This company is focused on making as much money at the upper levels as possible. Production staff and non shareholders are paid much less than at competitors. Very little opportunity is given for growth, since they don't want to pay you to advance to middle management. Management is very opaque and shares almost no information with lower level staff (no transparency at all). Staff are not treated like professionals, there are several old school principals that watch the elevator and log when people come and go. The CEO definitely does not know your name. I'm now at a competitor and it's a night and day difference in almost every category.

    Advice to Management

Aim for more transparency, and try to eliminate the huge disparities between upper management and lower level staff.

Company does provide opportunities for growth, but you need to be your own advocate.

    Easy to become pigeon holed.

    Steady business.
    Work-life balance.

    Cons

    Restricted opportunities for non architects/engineers.
Failure to address underperforming or slacking employees.
    Not much involvement between offices.

    Pros

There is a general belief in doing the right thing at Clark Patterson Lee but it is not done very well when it comes time to execute.

    Cons

The management structure of the company is opaque. There is no plan, other than to execute on the work in front of every one. It is pretty much an "every man for himself" shop which means to survive you need to build alliances and really work the political side of interaction.

    Advice to Management

Hire some professional managers who know how to run a company and keep the practice managers focused on doing the work with the clients. Just because you have a PE or an Architect's license does not mean you know how to run a business. In fact, most don't want to and chafe at having to do the business administration side of their jobs.

    Pros

CPL is a great place for me to start my career. My mentors have been extremely supportive and understanding because I am a recent college graduate. Even though I don't know much about the field yet, they never become frustrated with the mistakes I make. They are always willing to teach me the right way to complete a project. Time off has never been denied, and they offer flexible work schedules.

    Cons

The salary and compensations are relatively low. I know that other firms pay more, and the health insurance isn't the greatest.

    Advice to Management

Pay the employees more money. Keep up the excellent management and mentoring. CPL is a great starting company to work for, but don't expect to get rich.
