I have been working at Cleary Gottlieb full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Cleary is a great law firm for lawyers - forward-thinking and progressive - but for administrators the system is quite different.

    Cons

For administrators, the system is still very backward. It is top management heavy, and middle management light, and the management is selected based on relationships with top management rather than actual skills. Managers at every level are under-trained in handling interpersonal conflict, and the way HR supports those managers is by paying them lip service but taking no action, or by bullying employees who have complaints...

    Advice to Management

HR should offer mediation services to negotiate interpersonal conflict. They should invest more in middle-management training for actually handling people. Upper management needs to set more comprehensive and clear road-maps for changes in the organization of administrative departments and for changes in technology.

I worked at Cleary Gottlieb full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

People were generally friendly and a pleasure to work with. Good place to start your career if you're looking for something short-term that will look good on your resume . Partners are willing to give young lawyers a high level of responsibility and autonomy if they prove themselves capable of handling it.

    Cons

Work/life balance was not good and partners don't seem to care. There is little diversity in the type of work that this office handles, which makes it difficult to get new experiences as a young attorney. It's also easy to get pigeon-holed into a type of work that you don't want to specialize in . This can also limit one's exit options if the type of work you do is not viewed as valuable to prospective future employers.

I worked at Cleary Gottlieb full-time for less than a year

      Pros

Smart Lawyers. Very fast paced. Lots of opportunity for overtime. Perks are great (subsidized cafeteria, cars home, lots of PTO). Paralegals are very close with each other.

      Cons

Work is mind-numbingly boring. Disconnect from the paralegals and deal teams. Little to no opportunity for advancement. Base pay is low.

      I worked at Cleary Gottlieb

      Pros

Cleary lawyers are easily some of the best and brightest. Importantly, the firm actively cultivates lawyers with interests outside the law.

      Cons

The firm requires the same long hours of most big law firms and there is limited scope to pursue alternate career paths.

Former Employee - Intern in Gaithersburg, MD

I worked at Cleary Gottlieb part-time for less than a year

        Pros

everyone was really nice and welcoming, very laid back although the lawyers had to be high strung, admins have little to now work and get paid well to pretty much browse internet

        Cons

no cons really, everyone very respectful and just wants to do their work and progress up the law ladder, cant complain!

        Advice to Management

keep doing what your doing, they've obviously made the firm successful internationally, they honestly dont really need admins anymore though

I have been working at Cleary Gottlieb for more than 5 years

          Pros

Cleary is very supportive of minorities of genders and race. It likes it's reputation of being quirky

          Cons

The divide between the lawyers and the professional staff is too great. Management is not supportive. No review of managers.
