I worked at Cleveland Metropolitan School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Union is better this year.

    Cons

There is the problem of inconsistent quality of administrators.

    Advice to Management

The administrators should be chosen with recent classroom experience for only a few years at a time.

I have been working at Cleveland Metropolitan School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you are interested in helping students who need the most help, this is the place to go. There are plenty of opportunities to teach, coach, coordinate. And there are many connections in the community that can be accessed to work collaboratively with others to help the community in general. The majority of teachers and administration are easy to work with. Parents can be challenging, but skills can be developed to be effective at reaching out to the parents.

    Cons

Most administrators are easy to work with, but if you have a nutty one, and they don't like you (even if you've been considered a good educator for years), they can ruin your year, or even your career. The district offices are often ineffective which adds an extra layer of frustration to an already difficult job. The middle management has too many ineffectual people who really don't belong there - - the working theory is that they got those jobs because they must know someone.
In addition, if you are just starting out in teaching I'm not sure that the new compensation package makes it work it to teach in some hard to work in schools. Tread carefully when getting hired.

    Advice to Management

work on recognizing talent and hiring thoughtful, intelligent managers and administrators.

I have been working at Cleveland Metropolitan School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great health care benefits and terrific retirement plan. Great environment and people that truly care about the students

    Cons

Little to no room for growth. Only movement at this employer is lateral. Lots of gossip and drama in certain departments and no recognition for hard and honest work. Some colleagues can have a poor attitude and can get away with anything because of the unions. Lack of communication from the top.

    Advice to Management

More recognition to employees/subordinates. Merit increases on salary. More open communication about policies or anything pertinent.

I have been working at Cleveland Metropolitan School District part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Per diem is higher than most districts.

    Cons

Too many out of control students coupled with unsupportive principals and politics. Teacher frustration is extremely high.

    Advice to Management

    Restructure teaching/learning environment.

    Pros

    Great benefits
We are improving in certain areas of the district

    Cons

The morale is very low. A lot of dead end weight works here, which means working with others can be complicated.
I sometimes feel things that are major complaints shouldn't be a big issues.

    Advice to Management

Allow young, innovative people to work here who have brilliant ideas who want to help change the District. Nothing will change if you don't seek for change.

    Pros

Flexibility to work when you would like. Decent pay compared to other school districts. Ability to join teachers union and have the benefits from within

    Cons

A lack of support from school administration in some of the schools within the district. Unrealistic goals from district executives

    Advice to Management

Work on improving the relationship between teachers and school administrators. Also communicating effectively with parents could help to improve student performance

    Pros

Good benefits, health and paid time off

    Cons

If you're not a friend of someone in admin or a member of the divine nine, you're not going to move up, incompetence and corruptness abounds, results painted to the public are generalizations, not hard data showing real imporvement

    Pros

    Nice, friendly people
    Good networking opportunities
    Top management is very approachable
    Attractive work spaces (downtown)
Lots of time off for holidays and other things

    Cons

Extremely outdated and dysfunctional management systems across departments
    Decentralized operations make communication challenging

    Advice to Management

Good customer service and effective communication have to start at the top of each department.

Current Employee - PEER INSTRUCTIONAL COACH in South Euclid, OH

I have been working at Cleveland Metropolitan School District (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The salary if you have been there for years. If you have been in the system a while, you are more likely to get other positions that you apply for since they work on a buddy system.

    Cons

No respect to employees. Professional development on things that is not important. 200 minutes of time used for meetings. No enough time to work in your classroom.
