    Pros

Brand new teachers are usually given excellent evaluations.

    Cons

After 5 years of teaching, teachers tend to get negative and evaluations.

    Advice to Management

Work on teacher morale and treat your teachers like professionals.

    Pros

Pay is competitive compared to other districts

    Cons

Ineffective and poor administration. Toxic district and building culture. No control over curriculum. At CMSD you are not a teacher, you are a babysitter.

    Advice to Management

This district needs a complete turn around. I work in a toxic environment that is nothing like any other school i have seen before. You are better off working at a charter school than CMSD.

I have been working at Cleveland Metropolitan School District full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The kids are interesting and - at their core - wonderful, as kids are (though not without their challenges); many of my colleagues were dedicated, driven, and competent

    Cons

Administration is often preoccupied with inane district goals; discipline and consistency of consequences and rewards is a struggle no one seems to have mastered; curriculum and resources are dated, sometimes hard to come by; feedback and assistance from superiors is often non-existent

    Advice to Management

The challenge is to find principals, APs, and teachers who want to work in extremely challenging teaching environments for what is ultimately not that much money. In order to so there must be true support and engagement from administration at all levels, both in terms of acknowledging the problems endemic to the school district as well as proposing real, actionable solutions.

    Pros

    good benefits, many good teachers

    Cons

Unless you are part of the in crowd, fraternity or sorority, it's highly unlikely that you will get promoted or respected for your abilities

    Advice to Management

Management is the problem, they need honest people in management that actually look at what is going on and make real changes, not just for publicity

I have been working at Cleveland Metropolitan School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I love (most of) my students. Working with them has changed my life. It's great to have weekends, holidays and summers off.

    Cons

There is little communication between the district, school administration, and school staff. More often that not, students know things before I do and are the ones to inform me of day-to-day happenings. You can also email several different people with a question and either 1) never get a reply back at all or 2) get back several very different replies from each of them. There is also a distinct lack of safety at my particular school. Students bring guns to school. Students are shot outside the building. Students attack teachers. Students attack students. One security guard for the whole floor while, more often than not, administration is locked in their offices holding endless meetings.

    Advice to Management

Safety should be a priority, not an after thought.
