I have been working at Cloud Peak Energy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are out of this world, and the pay rate is quite high for starting electricians. Local company that is probably the most stable energy company that operates out of the Powder River Basin, great safety structure.

    Cons

Management of the electrical department at the Antelope Mine location are totally abusive of their authority, and interpret company policies regarding holidays and vacation time totally backwards. Coworkers couldn't be more vulgar. I've worked in some rough places with some rough people, but this place takes the cake. Verbal harassment is quite common, and jokes of sexual nature. I highly don't recommend working in this environment if you are a woman. It doesn't matter how thick-skinned you are.

Management never has enough for us to do, making the 12 hour shifts go by slow, S-L-O-W, and we're overstaffed, and still hiring. Unfortunately, because the management is abusive, the people who work here tend to dislike the management, bringing down the moral, and work ethic of the entire department. It's rather sad, because this place could be awesome. The pay and benefits are awesome, but the work environment is not. If you get a job here, get used to vulgar speech, (quite a but more than old fashioned cowboy cussing, believe me) and slow days, with not enough work.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at the professionalism of the mine sites. I know that the town office is extremely professional, but the mine sites are not. More accountability needs to be enforced over the planners and supervisors, especially in the maintenance departments, so that the overall moral of the place can increase. There are people here who abuse their authority, and because of that, the laborers are not happy campers, and don't do their best.

I have been working at Cloud Peak Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good working environment with lots of good people. The company does care about the employees and takes care of them. The company takes pride in safety of employees and taking care of the environment. The company has a small feel to it where you seem to know everyone. The upper management does get out in the field to visit with the employees.

    Cons

Coal is a hard market to be in right now, but company is being very smart. The opportunities to grow within the company seem limited and the company does not seem to be growing. If the company does not get the Asian exports I see little growth in the near future. Pay has been pretty stagnant recently as well.

I have been working at Cloud Peak Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Management is fair, the company is proud of the work they do. Good safety record, management really does care about the health and safety of the workers. Company does a good job with environmental work, especially in regards to reclamation. Cost management in hard times has been done well. Excels at efficiently extracting coal in open pit mining environment - very good at what they do.

    Cons

Internal advancement can be limited in some areas of the business. Long term outlook is not great given the industry problems. Culture in the corporate offices is a bit stiff, and management is pretty set on a traditional Monday through Friday, 8/9 to 5 schedule for office employees.

    Advice to Management

In the current environment, cost cutting is important, but management needs to maintain competitive salaries and benefits if they want to retain talent. The broader markets are not being hit the way coal is, so cutting salaries and benefits will result in losing valued employees to other industries. Also, many other companies have moved to 9/80 schedules or other more flexible arrangements, give more or allow purchase of more vacation days, and/or allow employees to work from home. These are all valuable tools that don't cost much that would go a long way towards boosting moral in tough times.
