Thankyou for your review and comment. It's great to hear you like the flexible hours and benefits. Regarding the lack of collaboration this isn't what we're about at the Co-op and we encourage teams... More

    I have been working at Co-op part-time

    Pros

membership, new offers, new holiday ent

    Cons

having to book your holidays off so fare in advance,
charity money racing each month is to much your customs like to feel at ease when paying for there shopping and not to be asked so many questions

    Advice to Management

Always say a little thank you to each member of your team,it dose not take much just to say THANK you.If member of staff is needing sport then take 5m to sport them.

I have been working at Co-op part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Treated with respect by managers. Have been supportive in rearranging my shifts to fit around uni. Have helped me gain work experience in areas other than my current role

    Cons

A lot of work to do in a short amount of time. Although they offer duty management training there are very few opportunities to get a management job due to the recession/cut backs. This is happening in all supernarkets though and doesn't reflect badly on the co-op

    Advice to Management

Maybe implement new techniques and policies to improve training so that there is less pressure on experienced staff

I have been working at Co-op full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Community centred roles with a focus on small teams helping each other.

    Cons

Small teams makes for little contingency capabilities.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the little things that matter to teams.

I have been working at Co-op full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Plenty of opportunity to gain new skills
    - No 2 days are ever the same
    - Friendly colleagues who genuinely care about ‘Being Co-op’
    - Good bonus
    - Great pension scheme (matched and doubled by employer)

    Cons

    - Training and progression can be a bit hit and miss across the different business functions (not the case in my area)
    - Inconsistent salaries for the same role in different business areas. Unachievable ‘up-to’ upper brackets when roles are advertised.
    - Several consecutive restructures have left colleagues wearing ‘multiple hats’ and doing the jobs of 3 or more people.

    Advice to Management

Keep at it, we’re heading in the right direction now! Love all the new innovative work the teams are doing, the Co-op difference / community focus and the plans for the future.

Review the workload of some individuals because they are being pulled in too many directions at once. Some people go into meetings at 9am and don’t see the light of day until 6pm. Eating in meeting rooms because meetings often span lunchtimes is a little too commonplace.

I feel salary banding need an overhaul (some roles are advertised with upper / lower bands that are separated by £20k), especially with the competition poaching employees with clear salary expectations that are often a few thousand more than the Co-op equivalent role. Try also to be clearer with role expectations when jobs are advertised. Often the advertisement is incredibly vague but the assessment criteria that sit behind the interview sifting process are very specific. Sometimes you are sifting out candidates who have the skills you are looking for, but because you don’t ask for it in the role portrait, the candidate may not focus on these in their application or during the interview.
