I worked at Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Collegial atmosphere, supportive management, great culture and lots of opportunities to be involved in activities. Opportunities to further your education with assistance from the firm.

    Cons

Partners are often given free rein in their interaction with staff and associates, which often means good employees and associates are lost as a result.

    Advice to Management

For the most part, job well done. Senior and executive management are excellent, but greater attention to uniform treatment of associates and staff would really help with morale.

I worked at Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good staff incentives and benefits

    Cons

Attorneys are rude, cold, above-themselves and others and micro-manage their secretaries/staff and HR lets them get away with it. You really don't feel good about your job and how hard you've worked by the end of the day.

    Advice to Management

Coach your attorneys on how to treat staff right and even perhaps be NICE to them! A "thank you" goes a long way!

    Pros

High-caliber attorneys with great support staff; challenging cases; good learning opportunities; awesome location; beautiful space; near Bart; fair compensation; supportive of community involvement.

    Cons

People with the best political skills will get ahead faster; constructive feedback needs improvement; people like to scapegoat; mistakes can cost you your career.

    Advice to Management

Some partners are better communicators than others; implement leadership training for development of management and communication skills for partners.

I worked at Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass full-time

    Pros

This is a great place to learn. The onboarding process was very smooth and organized. The HR department goes above their way to make new employees feel welcome and part of the firm. The staff is very helpful and the attorneys are generally approachable.

    Cons

Some of the process/work flow is a bit dated. They should take advantage of modern technology to help improve efficiency.

    Pros

Smart attorneys. Lean staffing means associates get great exposure early on. A number of good partners (particularly the junior ones) who care deeply about mentoring and development.

    Cons

Prepare to work Big Law hours for small firm pay. Starting at the mid-level ranks, you'll bring home 50k less than you would at a large firm for the same hours and more stress. Morale will likely improve due to some key departures, but there remains a culture of micromanagement and blame. Very hit-or-miss experience, depending on who you work with. Lower likelihood of partnership than management would like to admit.

    Advice to Management

An organization's culture is shaped by the worst conduct it tolerates. Do not allow partners to mistreat staff and associates.

I have been working at Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass full-time

    Pros

People really seem to care about the firm's identity and carrying forward the tradition. On balance, it's a collegial environment. Increasing attention is being paid to what we think about management and operations. Partners are mostly thoughtful and well meaning, even if not always approachable. A lot of new hires recently. There are advancement opportunities - you can still make partner and it's not just about billables.

    Cons

There have been a few bumps over the past couple of years and there have been negative attitudes on all sides (also happened at my prior firm, but it feels different here because this is a different type of law firm). Some strong personalities that require maneuvering. Moving offices will be a big adjustment.

    Pros

Nice offices and location, nice co-workers.

    Cons

Don't waste your time and talent here. Incompetent management and HR who do not know what they are doing, how to find the appropriate candidates to fill positions, or how to keep valuable staff members.

    Advice to Management

Hard to give advice to management that shouldn't be there in the first place. Coblentz really needs an overhaul in HR and have management with the backbone to know how to deal with capricious attorneys and not be afraid to hire people who know how to do their job, i.e., people with experience!

I have been working at Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass full-time

    Pros

Ferry building location, free drinks, some nice co-workers.

    Cons

Badly managed, HR does nothing when there is a problem and will turn on you in an instant. There is no office manager. Lots of attorneys who are screamers and are allowed to mistreat staff time and time again. High turn-over rate. Many people have quit in the last two years. You can complain all you want and nothing ever happens. Certain people are treated well while others are not. Staff lives in constant fear of certain attorneys.

    Advice to Management

Fire the the problem attorneys who make the staff's lives miserable. Appreciate your staff and those who work hard by giving them positive feedback and standing up for them. Address issues instead of sweeping them under the rug.

I have been working at Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass full-time

    Pros

Partners genuinely care about associates and want to work with them to train them and develop their careers at the firm. Growing firm, but has a very quirky SF culture. Hours are reasonable and pay is good for a mid-size firm.

    Cons

Barely a bonus, depending on the department you work in, can have long hours.

    Pros

Good benefits, small pension, nice attorneys (no screamers), though a few could use some coaching on how to treat people.

    Cons

Managing partners do not meet with department managers. Managing partners try to work as full time attorneys and managing partners, which is really hard. No bonus at the end of the year - just a holiday 'gift.'
