    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Coconino Community College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great co-workers
    Wonderful mission
    Amazing students
    Fulfilling work
    Good benefits
    Amazing time off

CCC has wonderful personnel who have an amazing amount of talent. Management DOES listen and takes everything to heart, especially with the new leadership in 2016. Co-workers care about what they do and about helping out the community at large.

    Cons

Government support in Arizona of community colleges is terrible. There is a fear that the College will have to make additional cuts in order to survive. It is hard to promote from within and it's difficult to get raises, but that's a product of government work. There are also a lot of people in academia who have not worked outside of such an institution, and there is some gossip and childish behavior because of the size of staff.

    Advice to Management

Keep departments working together and be transparent in actions. Keep working hard to make sure that the College survives to improve the lives of our county's residents!

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Coconino Community College (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great faculty and staff. Nice facilities. Beautiful environment.

    Cons

Where do I start? Low pay, especially considering the hours put in. I taught technology and worked typically from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. M-Th and put in a lot of time on Fridays and the weekends for meetings and continuous prep. Last year, I tracked my hours = 2375 for a 9-month contract. I love teaching, but received continuous snarky remarks from supervisor over the 4 years. For example, I arrived late to an 8 a.m. Friday meeting after having taught until 9 p.m. on Thursday. Was docked 1 1/2 hours of sick time (by the way, this is illegal). Quit in continuous frustration with verbal abuse and crappy management. Horrid environment .. the worst I've been associated with in 35 years. Way to go CCC!

    Advice to Management

Advice to board: Start over. You have some good administrators and (I KNOW you won't listen to this...) but fire some of the others due to repressive and horrid management approaches. Management will dole out promotions based on friendship, not qualifications. I quit in frustration... not because of teaching ... but because of crappy management.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Coconino Community College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Coworkers (!)
    -Helping community/students
    -Hours
-Benefits are very good for Flagstaff

    Cons

-Demanding faculty who act like the students they teach (most have only had this job after college so they lack experience in the real world)
-State/County budget issues result in short-staffed departments (most can only put out fires - there's no ability to plan because you're busy just keeping things afloat)
-Cliques of faculty glom together to force changes they want, disregarding others' views
-Administration doesn't have a clear picture of what's happening at the direct-student-contact-level
-Managers (called "Directors") are all friends. They will not consider dissenting views from anyone lower than them.
-Pigeon-holed into positions (several staff members can't move to other areas of the college b/c of personal opinions of their managers and/or because the manager doesn't want to lose the person, so they get stuck in a dead-end job)

    Advice to Management

Get in the trenches and see how attitudes of administration and faculty impact employee morale and effectiveness.

Be open to other opinions when making decisions, even if they conflict with the President's will.

These 2 things might explain the nosebleed turnover

    Pros

Coconino Community College is a wonderful learning environment for students and good place to start a career, with faculty and staff lending help when needed.

    Cons

CCC lacks the foresight in mentoring talent when its at hand and suppresses innovative thought when its displayed or attempted.

    Advice to Management

Value innovation and nurture talent within your staff, keep from focusing strictly on the bottom line even during economic downturns. Setting True obtainable goals always succeed over lofty good sounding goals.

I worked at Coconino Community College full-time

    Pros

Decent salary, good people who work there.

    Cons

Are not supportive or loyal to long-time staff and employees. Are ridiculously bureaucratic to the point that nothing gets done. President is disconnected from Flagstaff community and people who work under her.

    Advice to Management

Decrease the amount of Directors and Mangers. It's top heavy.
