Great coworkers, lackluster management
Dec 14, 2022 - Fire Protection Engineer in Honolulu, HIRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There are a lot of really great people that work for Coffman, the engineers and supporting staff are really positive, upbeat, and ready to make a difference. Coffman provides coffee, a fridge with snacks, and free breakfast. Coffman definitely provides a fun, hip, up-and-coming atmosphere, but it is all smoke and mirrors.
Cons
These cons are specific to the Honolulu office- Burnout is a constant. Young engineers are overworked and undervalued. Principal engineers work way too much as well, but at least they are compensated for their time in the form of large bonuses, company stock, and other free perks. Coffman is a revolving door. Use it to get your PE and then get out and make more money at a company that WILL value you. I find it comical the amount of reviews that claim "work-life balance". Most people are working late into the night and on weekends.

Very unfortunate that this was your experience at Coffman. We are not perfect, and it sounds like we need to make some further improvements. We are not simply watching and rewarding metrics, we are committed to being a company where everyone can thrive. We will continue to raise the bar of expectations for our managers and close the gap between who we say we are and individuals' daily experiences. I am sincerely disappointed to hear this. Other departments may be better
Feb 13, 2023 - Electrical Drafter in Spokane, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Benefits, free lunch occasionally, Christmas bonus
Cons
They say to ask more questions When questions are asked they are not answered clearly and leave you guessing then you are punished for not knowing the answer.

So sorry your experience lacked clarity. Also, your comments about mentorship and inclusion are troubling. This business of ours is an apprenticeship environment. Without mentorship, we can't perpetuate the company, because most of what people need to know is learned on the job. We wouldn't have survived for 44 years if we didn't mentor our team members. I'm definitely not saying that we are perfect at mentorship and can't improve. Same applies to leading with clarity. We are working on these and other items as we continuously improve Coffman. Part of those enhancements are being worked on by our Diversity and Inclusion committee. Sorry that our journey and your journey are no longer combined. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Sincerely, Dave Ruff - CEO

Great place to work! But has major flaws
Jul 12, 2022 - Mechanical Engineer III in Spokane, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
They are a fantastic company to work for! I'm loving my time here! I don't think I could ask for better coworkers, a more flexible schedule, or a better company culture.
Cons
Comparatively, they under pay their younger engineers (it seems like Coffman is a good place to come to mid-career but not start at). This is really putting the squeeze on younger employees due to the new, current economic situation we are in. Coffman is going to see a large turnover of younger employees very shortly because of this. Also, the health benefits need a major overhaul (due to the current landscape of medical care being so grossly inflated). The health insurance they provide isn't great. So much so that some of their principals don't use it. It may have worked before, but it doesn't seem to be working now. It is fostering a culture of medical care avoidance.

The dynamic you referenced about pay versus cost of living is a real dynamic nationwide, and industry wide. Historic inflation isn't helping matters. Companies can choose a more volatile path (i.e., high debt, hire/fire attitude). However, Coffman has always taken a more conservative approach, which has proved to be a more stable model. We have a good track record of growing through recessions. That is directly connected to the way we run our business and seems to be the best long-term service to our employees (as others are being furloughed). Doesn't mean we don't need to continually look at this, but our solution will likely be more conservative than our competitors. Thanks for the feedback. Dave Ruff - CEO

Pros
Great coworkers and managers. Everyone is willing to help each other. Opportunity to focus on your interests. Feel very valued here.
Cons
Medical benefits could be a little better but they do offer HSA employer matching to offset the high deductible.

Pros
The events they plan are a lot of fun and they create a great community. They get tons of projects which means there is always something new.
Cons
Younger engineers are paid very little and it takes a long time to work up to a decent pay. Long hours are expected and while schedule is flexible, everyone seems to end up getting burnt out from the unrelenting schedule of project deadlines

We do have a strong reputation in the Pacific which continues to bring in lots of interesting projects. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find people in the Honolulu market, which can exacerbate the work/life balance issue. I will continue to work on work-sharing options with other offices to lighten the load in Honolulu. Thanks for the feedback. Dave Ruff - CEO

Never get tired of hearing that we have a great company and that we know what we are doing ;) We have been working really hard to create a leadership team that is unified and focused. Not perfectly, but increasingly. Looks like we need to do some work to make sure your compensation is competitive. We would appreciate the opportunity to do so. Thanks for being on the Coffman team. Appreciate the note about our benefits and flexibility. And thanks for being on our team for 8-10 years. We are consistently busy, but that is better than the alternative. Hopefully our overtime pay and comp time policies help sooth those busy times. Dave Ruff - CEO
