I worked at Coherent full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I can not think of anything good about this company

    Cons

Very toxic place to work. No stability. Every 12 months there is a layoff to fudge the earning numbers to meet the revenue and earning expectations. Employees are dispensable. Insecure, old and useless managers hire contractors and young engineers to keep up the work loads and when time comes, they chops these people first. Company can no longer stay competitive and eventually will go out of business.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the dead weights. Take care of the young, talent engineers

I worked at Coherent full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great HR department full of really nice people. Decent benefits for insurance, 401k, dental, and Healthcare. One annual picnic in the summertime.

    Cons

Publicly held company, expect lay offs regularly. Little reinvestment or R&D, instead they buy up other companies. Business org chart hidden making lateral moves difficult. Intense politics amongst upper management. Extremely depressing environment.

    Advice to Management

Invest in Coherent to make it great again.

I worked at Coherent full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There used to be some good things about the company but they are becoming fewer & fewer. I worked there for 24 years as a field service engineer. They used to care about their employees and do everything they could to keep from laying people off.

    Cons

They are trying to get by with fewer & fewer employees while reducing or eliminating their benefits and taking away company cars for hard working field service engineers. They lay people off with no notice and no negotiation and target those with the company the longest and oldest with no consideration that their age will keep them from being hired by anyone else.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your employees right and stop only thinking about the bottom line.

    Pros

    Great Peers, cool products too.

    Cons

Upper management is extremely disassociated with the lower level. Finance management is the core of their strategy. Unless you have a guardian angel, you will never move upwards and will be laid off once you are at the top range of your salary group.

    Advice to Management

You have heard it before, and you can hear it any day, if you would just listen. You have a great staff, stop treating them as disposable assets. There are so many great ideas and committed workers, you really need to change your corporate strategy about promotion & retention.

I worked at Coherent full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    1) Leader in the laser industry - Due to acquisition, not growth.
    2) Salary for all positions is very good and highly competitive. Although all other benefits are very lacking - Low to no Profit sharing / 401k, worst Healthcare coverage available.

    Cons

    1) Poor Leadership - All leaders do not think out of the box. Repeatedly see the same problems occur and no systemic change.
    2) No Growth Opportunity - This company does not offer ways to advance. Most people here are old and do not plan to move up or leave their position. This also gives you an understanding of why they do not think out of the box.
    3) Unclear boundaries between Manufacturing and R&D. They are unable to separate and prioritize these functions. The leadership is bad and so a middle management, you are torn between the two groups.

    Advice to Management

Have better leadership. Stop changing the goal every 6 months. Learn continuous improvement and create a strategic 5 year plan.

    Pros

The best reasons to work at Coherent include: (1) well-defined ERP systems and corporate controls; (2) supporting groups that are excited and motivated about the work they do; and (3) leader in the laser technology industry.

    Cons

The company promotes balance in its work/life perspective. My experience could not be further from the truth. My manager (controller) was not supportive of anyone's work/life balance save for her own. She described any conflicts between weekend plans and work that she allowed to spill over to the weekend as "personal problems". I was only to pleased to terminate my employment quickly.

    Pros

Low growth company filled with people just waiting to retire. If this is you, then get a job there.

    Cons

Low salaries, no growth, bad for young engineers/managers trying to establish their careers.

    Advice to Management

Get new blood into the company and take some risk.
