Compatibility among the employees who produce the end product

    Cons

    Upper management boys club mentality

GM communicates ONLY via email to the workers and never gets to know the people in his facilities

Disconnect between Corporate satellite manufacturing plants

Company doesn't know how to treat their employees as important partners just looking to force the culture of work and no reward

    Advice to Management

Get to know the people who produce the profits

I have been working at Coherent full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Employee turnover is really low. People have started when they were 18 and are still around 35 years later. Being in this environment allows you to really take care of your relationships at work and get to know the people there since you may be with them for a long time. Unlike startups where people come and go and have the mentality of "I'm leaving here soon; I'm only here to use this as a stepping stone."

    Cons

    - Lack of transparency
    - Difficult to get promoted (especially if you are a woman)
    - Stingy raises (if you even get one, especially if you are a woman)

    Advice to Management

Communicate to your employees and reward those who deserve it.

    Advice to Management

Review middle managers and share the bonus

    Pros

    Stable, conservative, predictable, and international.

    Cons

Dull culture (or no culture to speak about at all). Not big on having an Org chart---to keep everyone in the dark about promotions (or non promotions). Below-market salaries. There used to be profit-sharing for the serfs, but that's been taken away ages ago. Very low turn over, so promotions are rare. Top heavy---too many managers. Lousy raises. Lousy company summer picnic. Lousy Christmas socials.

I worked at Coherent full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Worked for the company for 10+ years. Good mid level people. Great industry. Good technology.

    Cons

Executive team is very isolated from their employees Limited career growth, employee benefits are being reduced, stock ownership has be scaled back, bonuses are only for senior management, vacation time burned through useless mandatory shutdowns. CEO is combative when given feedback.

    Advice to Management

You need to be more conscious of how your quarterly numbers-driven business decisions impact your workers. A more egalitarian approach to comp and benefits is needed.

I have been working at Coherent full-time

    Pros

Assembly line workers to mid level mangers are hard working, friendly and respectful. My coworkers and my boss are the main reasons I have stayed at Coherent for so many years and why I would recommend this employer to a friend. But if it is important to you to work for a cutting edge high tech company, note what I say in the Cons section as a caveat ...

    Cons

Upper management is too penny pinching and too focused on meeting quarterly numbers at the expense of long term investment. As a result, some of Coherent's core product designs are over 10 years old and losing market share to the competition. R&D efforts ot replace these aging designs are oftem terminated or held back because of upper management's penny pinching attitudes. Of course, it's important to spend money wisely. But R&D needs better support. Innovation doesn't happen for free. Innovation costs money. Workers should feel that they have the necessary financial support to innovate, and not feel pressured to justify relatively small expenditures for R&D.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to send a stronger message of support for innovation in Coherent.

I worked at Coherent full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good cross-functional teams with some great team members located in EU. Flexible work hours and good work life balance. I always enjoyed working with my team members at Coherent.

    Cons

This is were your career goes to die. No advancements or development opportunities. Benefits have been cut back to the bare minimum including barely annual increases. Take it or leave it attitude from HR and management. You are expected to do your job well. Full Stop.

    Advice to Management

Build a leadership pipeline and get in touch with your employees.

I worked at Coherent full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Worked for Coherent for > 20 years and have seen many changes. Coherent has a lot of great people and the work environment is not bad. Salary is competitive, and had opportunity to advance.

    Cons

Management is not in contact with employees and benefits have been reduced to save the bottom line. Unless you are senior manager there are no options or bonuses. People with more than 15 years have a target on their backs and in line for the next round of lay offs.

    Advice to Management

Time to move forward and get new senior management. In this case, change would be a good thing.
