      Account Executive - Healthcare Practice

Feb 6, 2016 - Account Executive in New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

C&W provides an environment that allows junior team members to reach up/take on things above their level, if they are interested in doing so. As long as they can show that they are capable of doing the work, a lot of trust and responsibility is placed on the junior team, which can lead to great opportunities (think AAEs traveling to Barcelona with their team or San Diego for medical meetings and getting lots of client interaction). Also, there is a focus on making sure the whole practice shares knowledge within and people are not siloed by teams. Culture is a priority for both the healthcare practice and the agency. There are tons of opportunities for ongoing training and continued learning, in addition to really fun parties and events. People are genuinely friends with each other and the environment is very supportive. Overall, throughout the agency and the healthcare practice there is a commitment to delivering the best/most innovative work for clients, which leads to really cool campaigns and activities.

      Cons

The healthcare practice has experienced some major growth in the past several years, which has lead to some growing pains. The senior team is definitely invested in making sure that these don't impact staff, but there is only so much they can do. With such significant growth comes under staffing issues, which can put a strain on staff. At times, the environment can seem a bit political, although generally this isn't something I think most folks feel day-to-day.

      A great place to work!

      Pros

Cohn & Wolfe is a great place to work. As a member of the Healthcare practice, i feel the leadership team does a wonderful job at not only leading the agency to success over and over again but at the same time really caring about their staff and helping to continue the trajectory of junior staffers' careers. Senior team is easily accessible and open to listening to concerns and desires of each staffer and is genuinely invested to give their employees the opportunities they want and help them achieve personal career successes. The culture at Cohn & Wolfe is one that I love and am proud to be a part of. The team works extremely hard and is full of some of the most driven PR practitioners across the county, but also knows how to have a good time and make sure that everyone is comfortable, happy and respected.

      Cons

The personal review process can use refining, but managers tend to do a good job at facilitating that and ensuring people understand any issues as well as successes on an ongoing basis. Also, due to the size of the agency, physical space can sometimes be a struggle.

Awesome Company, Great Clients, Exciting Culture

Dec 28, 2015 - Account Supervisor in New York, NY

      Pros

I've worked at the company for 5+ years and still don't feel that I've hit a ceiling. There is ample room for professional growth and development, with dedicated senior leadership that takes an active interest in mentoring employees at all levels. Each office location has a distinct look and feel, but there is a shared theme across all (domestic and global) that focuses on - and fosters - collaboration, creativity, and teamwork above all. Workplace culture is extremely affable with an emphasis on shared success; in my time here I've seen only healthy competition among individual teams striving to deliver the best, award-winning work for their clients. There's a healthy appetite for new business and prospecting, but a constant focus on maintaining and growing existing clients, which is really conducive to personal growth across accounts. Schedules can be demanding depending on which accounts you're on, but management does a great job with providing perks, incentives, and fun workplace activities to help alleviate long hours. Would definitely recommend working here!

      Cons

The performance review cycle is a bit ambiguous at times and can seem inflexible given broader corporate requirements.

Agency on the rise. Great People, Better Culture.

Aug 27, 2015 - Account Supervisor in Los Angeles, CA

      Pros

Cohn & Wolfe Los Angeles is an incubator for corporate culture. The type of shop that provides the benefits of an international agency, with the integrated feel of a boutique shop. Leadership does a tremendous job of ensuring that everyone has a voice at any level, and that the right support is provided to grow those voices to become future leaders. CWLA gives marketers the opportunity to work on a variety of blue chip accounts across the larger CW network, in a variety of disciplines from social media, to entertainment marketing, to creative direction, corporate communications, and experiential marketing. It's more of a family than an office.

      Cons

Hardly a con... but the agency is built on polished hustlers, team that is constantly striving for new business and better results for current clients. Sometimes the pace can become heavy for those that are not up to the challenge. Salary + compensation could be stronger versus competition.

      No Emphasis on Retention

Nov 8, 2013 - Account Executive in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great learning experience, they do a good job of hiring people who fit in with the practice- smart, hard working, obviously very personable. Clear path for growth and raises and promotions, in time.

      Cons

This is true of industry overall, but there is zero focus on employee retention. The amount of turnover here is disturbing for employees and for clients. This leads to constant lack of consistency in directives from account leadership to junior staffers and leads to a lot of frustration. Another thing is that the raises are offensive. You have people coming in at your level who are new to that level/account/company who are making significantly more money than you do despite having a many month learning curve, which ultimately becomes the impetus for current employees wanting to leave. The pay is not even close to being commiserate with the hours and expectations. Also, as with the industry as a whole, promotions are based on time, not merit... if you are good at your job, you will hate this.

My experience at C&W has been a positive one

Mar 4, 2015 - Vice President in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

People really care about each other and the work that they are doing. The work is interesting and rewarding, and if you have an idea (clients who view you as a partner versus "the agency"), you are welcomed to present it and execute it. This is truly a big-tique firm. Plus, the CEO rolls up her sleeves and helps -- she knows your name and face -- and our practice leaders know you, how you are dating, where you live, etc and really care about you!

      Cons

There can be long hours and politics just like anywhere of course, but it's all manageable and its up to you to leave on time when you can. Net-net, you control your own destiny.

Top-notch agency with smart, hard-working employees

      Pros

Large agency that offers more resources than smaller companies but still maintains a home-like feel; incredibly smart employees, ranging from junior staff to senior leadership; heavy emphasis on creativity and pushing the envelope in all things; values/recognizes high-quality work from teams and individuals; always seeks opportunities to unite employees under common goals; impressive client roster that allows for team shifts based on personal interests and skills.

      Cons

Heavy workload, as with all PR agencies, but this can often be addressed if clearly vocalized.

Speaking for LA Office Only: Took some time but work, structure, and culture are in a good place.

      Pros

This office works tirelessy but still enjoys leisure time in the office. The culture and team work is strong and everyone communicates very well with each other. We reward and remind ourselves of the hard work we do.

      Cons

Little room for promotion; seems promotions are given to favorites- people who get ahead are the people looped in with senior management on a friendship level, rather than professional.
