I have been working at Colby College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

An inspiring program, one of the first of its kind. Lots of passion and energy going into a sensitive but important issue.

    Cons

It's a young program, so there can be organizational/time issues due to its youth and interest in the program

    Advice to Management

Keep working hard! Emily is a great boss and really listens to her employees and the students.

I worked at Colby College full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and people to work with.

    Cons

Many salaries do not keep up with industry standards. The only way to get a significant pay increase is to threaten to leave at which time you might be given a pay increase. Annual salary increases are meager around 1.5% for top-performers. I generally wouldn't complain, but there's a dichotomy when letters go out stating tuition costs are going up 5% to keep up with cost of living increases, but pay increases for workers are much below that.

I have been working at Colby College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Colby College has an extremely professional and collaborative atmosphere. If you can get hired then you will find they have a very low turnover rate and tons of intra-campus advancement opportunities. The woman I replaced as an administrative assistant had been in the position for four years and went on to become an assistant director of a very large program.

    Cons

There is no training program whatsoever! As I was told on my first day, "it's sink or swim." However, that means that self-starters and ambitious people will have a ton of room to think outside the box, think for themselves, and find their own solutions to challenges. I couldn't be more happy here.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up! However, a little more presence from HR with regards to temps might be a good thing!

I have been working at Colby College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    • Take into consideration work-life balance of a college student, allowing for work-schedule flexibility - academics valued as top priority
    • Professors are wonderful mentors and go above and beyond what is necessary - providing students with networking opportunities and resources

    Cons

    • Can be hard to find a professor with matching research interests, as it is a small liberal arts college with a smaller faculty

    Advice to Management

I worked at Colby College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good student job, gives opportunity to work with professors outside the classroom, flexible schedule, looks good on the resume, not too time consuming

    Cons

Can only work 12 hours a week, Maine's minimum wage is really low, definitely need an additional source of income
